• Regular Meeting - Online via Zoom

    Online event

Join us to weigh in on some strategies for moving forward as a primarily online meetup group, at least for the foreseeable future.

We'll also consider some options for topics and format, including a schedule of interactive micro and/or mini lessons -- I have a few that are ready to go on (for example) "WordPress and the LAMP stack" and "tweaking CSS via the Customizer" -- suggest a topic, or (even better) volulnteer to offer something!

  • Protopage: Demonstration and Examples

    Online event

As an active member of the Champaign-Urbana Computer Users Group (CUCUG) I invite you, as my guest, to attend a presentation on Protopage. The presentation will follow a Q&A period at the beginning of the meeting.

Protopage is a web portal, rss feed aggregator, bookmark keeper, and an almost no-learning-curve web publishing tool!

Using Protopage as a web portal can speed up online activity by consolidating information from many websites onto one. It can also increase the speed of your browser itself by removing the overhead of heavy tabbed browsing between multiple websites. It does more than cross platform bookmark managers, providing custom organization and storage for photos, notes, as well as bookmarks, feeds, and many other web clips or widgets. It is used by many schools, churches, and clubs as a free and simple web hosting solution avoiding expensive or time consuming web design, learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. and needs no expensive software like WordPress themes and plugins, or design tools like Dreamweaver.

  • Developer Tools Tricks for Everyone

    Online event

As an active member of the Champaign-Urbana Computer Users Group I invite you, as my guest, to attend a demonstration I will be co-presenting. If you have not already well explored the uses of Dev Tools this may be a useful introduction, even for non-developers. The presentation will likely start about 30 to 45 minutes into the Zoom meeting which will open 15 minutes early to allow the meeting to start promptly with greetings and general computer problems and solutions.

Summary: Mark Zinzow and Quentin Barnes will cover some basic and useful features of the Developer Tools included in all modern web browsers.

Mark will demonstrate ways to live edit any web page, how to download video and audio for offline use from pages that have no menus to do so, how to add tables or other html content to a Gmail message even though Gmail provides no menu or controls to do so, and touch on JavaScript, bookmarklets, user scripts, and more Dev Tools examples if time allows. Lecture notes are at: https://tinyurl.com/mzdevtools

Quentin will show how to find errors, performance, accessibility and security issues on web sites including red flags to watch for in online banking, discuss performance improvements from ad blockers, and cover Google Lighthouse.

I hope this may be especially helpful for new members.
