I'd like to be able to design and develop my own theme for wordpress. In addition to html and css, I will need to learn php, correct? Anything else?

Thank you for your input and suggestions.

Hi Meryl, suggestion: There are two "uber themes" that allow you to customize them. Sort of an in-between solution between having to delve into the guts of programming and simply using someone else's theme. They are Headway (headwaythemes.com) and Thesis (diythemes.com/thesis/). You may find one of these to be a good solution. Thesis requires some knowledge of PHP, Headway does not. Good luck.

Hi Meryl-- I highly suggest you attend tomorrows Meetup on Parent/Child Themes (also known as "Theme Frameworks"). These frameworks will allow you to build themes quicker and faster than every before.
