The Passage by Justin Cronin (Maybe the best read of this year!)

This book was brought to my attention and yours by another member of Words and Wine so I went out to pick it up because she put in the 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' catagory and that peaked my interest considerably.

Upon arriving at Borders I was anticipating an average page turning book. Wow the heft on this book surprised me. 766 pages to be exact and I thought 'gonna take me a few weeks to get through this'. I read the book in a little under 5 days. The passages grab you and you hold on for a wild ride.

Now, truth be told this is not a book I would generally pick up, it deals with a bit of sci-fi, apocolypse, etc. but does have a stream of mystery and detective that engaged me immediately. The cast of characters are many and frankly I will be re-reading the book again to catch some details I passed over in the beginning.

I 'highly' recommend this book and can't wait to have a discussion and much to my joy I have learned the story is a trilogy. Even better.

So go out pick up this book, or buy it on kindle and get ready for a wild ride. Very much worth your time.

Below is the passage that starts it all:

?It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.?

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear?of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

With The Passage, award-winning author Justin Cronin has written both a relentlessly suspenseful adventure and an epic chronicle of human endurance in the face of unprecedented catastrophe and unimaginable danger. Its inventive storytelling, masterful prose, and depth of human insight mark it as a crucial and transcendent work of modern fiction.
