Announcing a new Meetup for CarbonfreeDC: Climate Change, Clean Energy & Sustainability!

What: Help green historical Walter Pierce Park!

When: May 2,[masked]:00 AM - 12:00 PM

RSVP here:

CarbonfreeDC will green Walter Pierce Park on May 2, from 8 a.m. to Noon... We need a ton of volunteers for this fun outdoor project. Please join us!

We will focus on removing invasive species and vines, picking up trash, and clearing brush in preparation for an archeological survey of the unmarked cemeteries at the park. More than 8,000 people, mostly African Americans or Quakers, were buried at the site in the 19th Century. Sign me up!

The survey will allow us to identify and protect vulnerable graves in the park. By clearing the brush, archeologists can use ground-penetrating-radar to find anomalies under the surface of the earth, including remains, grave shafts and artifacts. This survey will help determine where vulnerable graves still exist under the surface of the earth, so that they can be protected. It will also help determine whether a heritage trail could be established within the cemetery, provide a beautiful and meaningful new green space in Washington, DC. Count me in!

Please meet us between 7:30-8:00 am at the Walter Pierce Park entrance on Calvert St.
