Justin Lui is a designer and artist pursuing the integration of responsive media in the physical world. He includes art-making, electronics, UX design, spatial design, and DJing in his mix of skills. Join us for a presentation about the making of an LED art piece named Poly-Mer, which incorporates the Raspberry Pi computer, Arduino microcontroller, Processing language, LEDs, and up-cycled plastic contact lens trays (among other things). Justin's presentation will also touch on various aspects of the project’s iterative development, including versioning/version control, written documentation, and visual documentation (e.g., photos, videos, and diagrams). • ABOUT OUR HOST We're being hosted by Philosophie! She began her career in support at HP and moved into technical writing in 2012. Since then she's written docs for companies like Umpqua Bank and Nike. In 2016, she came on board as the first technical writer at Epiq Global, launching a documentation effort that encompasses multiple systems and clients. Erin also runs a freelance technical writing business through her website, readthefriendlymanual.com, providing custom service to small- to medium-sized B2B clients. She has spoken at Write the Docs North America and the Bullish Conference.

In this talk, I’ll explain what makes bad docs bad and how to make them better. Whether your company has dedicated technical writers or you pass all writing duties off to the engineer with the least amount of typos, I’ll cover general writing advice and best practices applicable to all who care about good documentation. • ABOUT NEWCARS.COM: NewCars.com was originally launched in 1995 as a stand-alone 3rd-party automotive site.     We are back to our regular format with invited talks from fellow documentarians at the spiffy Supplyframe DesignLab in Pasadena! Software developer Nik Kantar will share his tips on code documentation (a.k.a. code commenting). We have spots for additional talks and discussion if anyone has a topic they'd like to share in a relaxed and welcoming environment. We'll also have some time for networking and socializing, as always.

  • Documenting APIs, the Symantec way!

    For our May meeting, WTD LA member Prince Jain and his colleagues will talk about the API documentation landscape at Symantec, including the tools used to generate and publish them and the issues that different teams face. Parking Details Validated parking is available in the structure opposite the Symantec building. Take a ticket when you enter the structure, park on any level, then exit on level 1. Remember to bring your ticket with you! Free parking is also available across Hannum Street in the Westfield Culver City mall. It's a 10-minute walk to Symantec from the Westfield parking area. Food and soft drinks will be provided, courtesy of Symantec. About the Presenters Prince Jain is the Principal Information Developer of Symantec's Consumer Business Unit. A former Java developer, he now works mainly on API and SDK docs for the Norton product line and develops content tools. Amit Gadekar is the Principal Software Engineer of Symantec's Shared Engineering Services. As a Java developer, Amit works on the Symantec Help Center, a Lucene-based search engine, along with other projects. Roy Savio Athayde is the Senior Principal Information Developer of Shared Engineering Services. He was a long-time technical writer at Symantec and is now the product owner for Symantec Help Center. He also develops authoring tools and content standards at Symantec. About the Teams The Consumer Business Unit (CBU) Information Development team writes the answers to people's questions about the Norton and LifeLock products, as well as the solutions to the problems customers face with other Symantec products. Shared Engineering Services provides content solutions to enterprise products and also supports the internal tools used at Symantec for software development.
