What we're about

We are a diverse group of writers with different backgrounds and writing interests (literary fiction, contemporary fiction, fantasy, blog posts, horror, science fiction, poetry, children's, young adult, creative nonfiction, memoirs, and more). Whether you’re an experienced writer or are just beginning to write, we welcome you to join us. We are all learning how to improve our writing, and we do our best to help and support each other.

We hold workshop sessions on the first and third Thursday of the month at 7:00 at Panera in Vernon Hills. Many members eat dinner there. We usually meet until 8:30-9:00, sometimes later. People come when they can and leave when they have to; there's no attendance requirement or fee.

On the second and fourth Thursdays, we work on our own writing projects or just sit and talk about writing, publishing options, and the like.

If someone wants to have their piece workshopped at a session, they submit it to Allie Qiu (qiu.allie@gmail.com), our Writers Bloc coordinator, no later than Thursday evening the week before the next Thursday session, and she distributes it to the group.

When we workshop a piece, the writer talks a little about the piece and what feedback they want from the group. For the next 30 minutes or so, the other members of the group discuss the piece. Each person shares a favorite line or two from the piece. Then, we discuss what’s working well in the piece, what isn’t working, and what is confusing, offering suggestions and ideas. After all of this, the author joins in to respond to the feedback, ask questions, and wrap up the discussion.

We conduct workshop in a positive, supportive manner. We don't do cutthroat critiques since we all know how difficult writing can be and how personal it is. We realize that writers need encouragement, not put-downs. We are not a competitive group of writers; we focus on collaboration, community, and creativity. If you have questions, feel free to contact us. We look forward to writing with you!

Writer's Bloc is a group to promote the art of writing, storytelling, and collaboration! The goal of the group is to spark creativity and increase writing energy. If your interest is to simply hone your skills for personal enjoyment or for professional development, join us! Our program includes reviewing of personal goal setting, discussions on elements of writing a story, writing prompts, and collaborative feedback.
