Description: This trip is one of the many we're doing in the fascinating Cowboy Trail area. The routes from the east are the most enjoyable ways up Mesa Butte and can be intertwined to make loops or point to point. The Roper Route from access 1 is now the standard way up to the mountain. The butte is prone to clouds massing all along the eastern escarpment and billowing over the top. Hopefully, it will be a clear day to enjoy the exceptional view: north to Sentinel Peak and Mount Burke, east over waves of foothills to Calgary, south past various lookouts to Chief Mountain in Montana, and west to Plateau Mountain, which, though blocking a panoramic view of the Divide, doesn't slow those pesky west winds one bit.
