Description: This is a great trip that takes you into the beautiful Johnston Creek Valley. Travel is easy throughout, but the 420 meter of elevation gain make this an intermediate route for some.
From the trail head kiosk, via Moose Meadows, a trail sign is immediately visible, directing one to follow the trail up and to the right. The next 3,2 kilometers takes you through light forest, which follows a lavishly constructed nature trail to the canyon's Lower Falls. The trail ends in an open snow covered meadow alongside Johnston Creek where the seven cold water springs of the Ink Pots bubble to the surface. It if is a clear day, the ink pot pool colors will be a bright contrast against the white snow.
Above the upper falls the trail climbs to join the old access road from the moose Meadows Trail Head. Two kilometers further along the road reverts to and descends into the Johnston Creek meadow where the Ink Pots are encountered on the right hand side of the trail.
The Ink Pots are karst features that mark the outlets of seven old mineral springs. Fed by rainwater and snowmelt that has percolated into the surrounding bedrock, the spring water emerges at a constant temperature of 4.8 degrees C.
