What we're about

“Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale, and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God.”

The great Yoga Teacher Tirumalai Krishnamacharya described the cycle of breath as an act of relationship with God. Other than the positive effects on body and mind, yoga therefore serves as a form of liturgy – a ritual undertaken in order to participate in the divine interaction between God and you.

Yoga in Christ was established to provide a healthy space for our community to practice this kind of yoga. Events are intended to complement each individual student’s religious beliefs. This supportive community helps us to explore joyous embodiment, cultivate peace in an accepting circle, and practice our preexisting relationship with Jesus Christ. We are a group of yogis at different stages of our development – beginners to experienced – who meet to practice asana (yoga poses), to muse, to breathe and to meditate together. Being aware and mindful, encountering meaning and peace, and developing lovingkindness are among the many rewards of our effort.

Yoga in Christ is also simply an inclusive group of experiential learners and like-minded friends who come together for a few hours to enjoy each other’s company in a comfortable room. All are welcome to join us. This warm invitation extends to all identities beyond gender, national heritage, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, stage of adulthood, ethnic group, spiritual tradition, physical attributes, and political and ideological viewpoints.

We currently serve the Triangle region of North Carolina. Those visiting or living in the areas in and around Apex, Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough, and Raleigh should be able to reach the space in North Raleigh within a 30 minute drive or so. Join to attend our weekly meetings. Get location and other details when you sign up at meetup.com/Yoga-in-Christ.

God is Love. And Love wins.

Classes begin in September 2017.

Friday Yoga in Christ Raleigh

Church of the Nativity

This is our regular 120 minute yoga session. You’re welcome to come fifteen minutes early before class and socialize. Once the doors close the session will be roughly 120 minutes in total. The first 30 minutes of the session will offer circle time to read and discuss one of the lessons, the Psalm or Gospel readings from the previous Sunday. We will then practice 60 minutes of breath-focused yoga. Afterward we will join together again in circle to share our experience. You’ll have some time to rehydrate and talk with friends after the formal part of the class. We’ll then close shop around 9:00 p.m. Barb and Bret will lead. We are a group of yogis at different stages of our development – beginners to advanced practitioners – who meet to exercise, muse, breathe and meditate together. You’ll fit right in if you're just beginning your yogic journey. This is an inclusive and peaceful practice. This invitation extends to all identities beyond gender, national heritage, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, stage of adulthood, ethnic group, spiritual tradition, physical attributes, and political and ideological viewpoints. We admire students who are advanced and we admire out-of-shape students who have the courage to begin again. We try to leave our ideas and judgments of rank and status behind. Students should bring a yoga mat, a towel, and a bottle of water to class. Doors will open Fridays at 6:15 and be locked at the start of practice at 6:30 p.m. Be punctual. Once the class starts there will not be any further admittance. Join us for this heart opening practice of ancient yoga. You will come away stronger and more centered if you do.
