Hello,

Welcome to our inaugural Yorkshire Geek Night Meet up.... we are delighted to invite you to our first event on Monday 18th May, which will focus on a very 'on trend' topic of Micro Services.

James Lewis is a Principal Consultant at ThoughtWorks and member of the Technology Advisory Board. James' interest in building applications out of small collaborating services stems from a background in integrating enterprise systems at scale. He's built a number of systems using microservices and has been an active participant in the growing community for a couple of years.

His talk will cover:

When should you use microservices? Scratch that, what on earth are they? Opinions range from “it’s just SOA, move along”, to “they are just the awesome”, to “you must be insane”. In order to understand when they might be useful - what problems they solve and why - we need to at least know what they are, before semantic diffusion claims them in all it’s ignominy.

The speaker will examine the characteristics of the microservice style using examples from his experiences over the last few years. Topics covered include the reasons you might want to split an application (or not), the benefits and the drawbacks of the style based on these real world experiences. Remember though, Rule 16. Distrust all claims for "one true way”.

We now have a second talk from Tom Davidson of Sky Betting and Gaming. Tom will talk about what Sky Betting and Gaming have learnt while evolving their platform towards a microservices architecture; the benefits realised and the challenges faced

Here is a short bio:

"Tom Davidson is the Enterprise Architect for the Gaming arm of Sky Betting and Gaming. Tom has used SOA-style architectures with microservice philosophies for many years building high performance web applications and is a strong advocate for the practice of agile architecture. Being an architect doesn’t stop him from coding however!"

We are really pleased to be able offer the talk available on a live YouTube stream also: \
