For our June Service Event, we will be doing the CU Canteen Run with the Salvation Army. http://www.cucanteenrun.org
The CU Canteen Run puts a face on the problem of homelessness in Champaign-Urbana. During a run, a truck full of blankets, clothes, hygiene products, food and water gets distributed at various locations around C-U such as the Champaign Public Library and the Champaign Bus Terminal. We will also provide information about community resources for additional food, clothing, shelter or other services.
Please arrive by 6:15pm for instructions. The Canteen Run will last from approximately 6:30 to 9:00. Some volunteers will be going in the truck and others will be going with myself (Mary) in my car following behind. This event is limited to the first 10 people; we will then start a waiting list and then add more dates if there is more interest.
Please feel free to bring items to donate to the Canteen Run. Items that are most needed include large men's underwear, socks, trial size toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo.
Please carry minimal items with you and do not bring anything of value, including cash. We will always be in pairs for safety reasons. The Salvation Army asks this of volunteers to be proactive rather than reactive. If an unsafe situation seems to be escalating, we will move to the next venue immediately.
