What we're about

From architecture to calligraphy and painting, visual aesthetics have been an integral part of Zen philosophy and expression. Even in the West, the great photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was influenced by the book "Zen in the Art of Archery" and described photographing as putting the "eyes, the head and the heart into alignment."

Photographers at all levels, and with varied interests are welcome. The focus is on approach, mindset and technique more than specific subject matter, so landscapes enthusiasts, documentarians, travel photographers etc. should feel at home.

The group is lead by photojournalist David Butow who has worked on assignment in dozens of countries around the world, primarily in Asia and the Middle East. His most recent project, Seeing Buddha, contains photographs from over 10 countries including Bhutan, Burma, India, Japan and Sri Lanka, and has been published in The New York Times, National Geographic and Tricycle Magazine. In 2015, he presented the series as a guest lecturer at Stanford University's Ho Center for Buddhist Studies.

The Seeing Buddha project was the the inspiration for the ZP meetup group and you can read more about it here: (
