What we're about

***Coronavirus Update***

Zenways Nottingham takes the health and wellbeing of the sangha and its attendees very seriously. In line with other organisations and the latest government advice to stop all non-essential contact we are cancelling our physical meetings until further notice

We are exploring a virtual meeting via Zoom instead and will update accordingly.

We'll be back in the physical world as soon as possible and appreciate your understanding at this time.

Take heed of the advice given and stay well

There is much we can learn from this situation that we can carry into the future. It shows us we are not islands unto ourselves. We are all interconnected and need to treat each other and the planet with love, compassion and empathy.

Together we will get through this. Support those who are vulnerable at this time and don't panic buy!

ABOUT ZENWAYS
We believe Zen is for everyone. We aim to make it accessible, useful, and potentially life-changing. Enlightenment is achievable right here within the stresses and busyness of modern life.

People come to Zen from many directions and from many spiritual and philosophical backgrounds. Practice in Zenways works with your body, mind and energy to create greater wellbeing, vitality and awareness, and a deep sense of your connection with all things and your true relationship with the universe.
Zenways (Zendo Kyodan) promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening (satori or kensho – the enlightenment of Zen) in the modern world.

BACKGROUND
Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi, the founder of Zenways, was the first Englishman to become a Zen Master within the Rinzai tradition. He founded Zenways in 2007.
We draw our inspiration from the works of two main Rinzai Zen Masters, Hakuin Zenji and Bankei, as well as many others. We work with Zazen (sitting meditation), Dozen (doing/active meditation) and Koan practices (contemplation on stories, dialogues or questions).
Our honorary head abbot, Shinzan Miyamae Roshi, lives in Bankei's former hermitage, Gyokuryuji, near Seki, Japan.

ZENWAYS NOTTINGHAM
Zenways Nottingham has been created as a branch of Zenways. Although the group is founded by members of Zenways it is open to everyone - you do not need to be a Buddhist. You are welcome to join us anytime and see if it for you.
Some of us are trainee Junior Zen Teachers under Daizan Roshi’s tutelage and have permission to teach under his guidance.
Whilst proud of the heritage behind us, Zenways Nottingham is very much a lay sangha. We are not about trying to recreate a Zen monastery complete with overly formal adherence to dogma and practices. Although there will be a bit of chanting sometimes!
Instead, we hope to raise practical awareness of Buddhist teachings that are still very relevant today bringing relief to suffering, the stresses of modern life, and the development of insight.

SUNDAY MEET-UPS
The meetings are at 10:30am to 12:00pm on the second Sunday of every month at Om Studios (2nd Floor), 19 Greyhound Street, Nottingham, NG1 2DP

There is a beginners 'Welcome and Orientation' session from 10 to 10:30am

At 10:30 we start the meeting properly where someone from Zenways Nottingham will give a talk or lead a discussion. Occasionally we show a recording of Daizan Roshi’s Dharma talk from the London dojo in Camberwell.

This is then followed by a period of Zazen (sitting meditation) and Kinhin (walking meditation) as well as other mindful exercises and energy meditations on occasion.

At the end of the meditation period a brief working meditation is performed, tidying the dojo. This allows us to bring our mindful practice into daily tasks and is followed by optional tea and biscuits

Clothing should be loose and comfortable facilitating easy movement.
Cushions, meditation benches and chairs are all provided.

We deeply regret there is no disabled access to our dojo. There are 48 steps up five flight to the meditation hall. Please bear this in mind when attending.

Cost - Zenways Nottingham is based on Dana or generosity. We give freely of the Dharma - Buddhas teachings, and we welcome any donations. These will go towards supporting Zenways both locally and nationally .

Finally, within Zen, whilst we take our practice seriously we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. There is still room for a good belly laugh and we hope to foster an inclusive and supportive atmosphere to help us share and develop our own practice.

Hi everyone, firstly we hope you and your loved ones are safe and well at this time. We can only follow the advice given and do our best to minimise the spread until this crisis subsides. In the meantime we must take every opportunity to support the vulnerable around us.

This is a trying time for all of us with a lot of stress and anxiety. There will be demands on us from all directions over the coming months. It's important we find some time for ourselves to recharge our batteries.

Meditation is our secret weapon here. Use it often.

As with all non-essential events we are closed to physical meeting for the foreseeable future. However we should be grateful we're living in a time of technological abundance which allows us to meet online instead for the time being.

Zenways Nottingham will be continuing our regular monthly Dharma and Meditation Meetings via Zoom.us. Please download the app prior to the meeting and rsvp this event to be sent the meeting id and password

There will be a discussion after the Dharma talk as usual but you are asked to ensure your microphone is muted when you enter the room and only open it when talking as multiple mics open at the same time can cause some strange audio feedback noises and leave it hard to discern what is being said.

The is an app available for tablets and smartphones as well as laptops. It's probably an idea to download these in advance of the meeting and familiarise yourself with them beforehand.

It's a very easy system to use there's nothing to be scared of and Zenways London has been using it successfully for a couple of years now.

Which neatly brings us on to Daizan's invite to join the main Zenways online community each week if you wish.

Full details of how to do this can be found here: https://zenways.org/zen-student-membership/

Please note that whilst there are monthly subscriptions available for those who wish to join, if your circumstances don't allow you the ability to afford the suggested contributions you can contact them and they will set things up for you.

As it says on the website, no-one is turned away for lack of means.

That said, Zenways and our teacher Daizan rely entirely on donations and course fees. Since everything has had to be cancelled for the foreseeable future if you are able to contribute it would be gratefully received.

Looking forward to seeing you all online.

Wishing you and your loved ones continued health and wellbeing
