I just heard about this lecture on the History of Chocolate at the National Arts Club.

(auditorium holds 150 people)

Reception starts at 6:30pm

Lecture 7pm-8/8:30pm

The Archaeology and Culinary Arts Committees, in conjunction with the New York Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, present Professor Rosemary A. Joyce from the University of California at Berkeley. Author of numerous scholarly publications devoted to chocolate, she will discuss the early history of the Theobroma cacao plant prior to 1100 B.C.E. Touching upon contemporary advances in archaeological chemistry, new interpretations of the impact of food on communal interaction, and the role of women in society, this journey through the history of chocolate offers an unusual window into the ways archaeology has developed within the last twenty years.
