Via Alpina- hiking over the Surenenpass

Dear All,

The idea would be to go for a long day hiking with significant altitude meters, as we are getting in the middle of the hiking season. The idea is to go from Attinghausen (469 meters) to Brusti (1530 meters) towards the Surenenpass (2290 meters), and from there going down to Blackenalp, Alpenrosli and Engelberg (900 meters). The distance is about 25 kilometers, 1500 meters up and 1500 meters down. Hiking time 9,5 hours (excluding lunch). The hike is a T2 (red/white/red) and although technically not difficult it might be that close to the Surenenpass there is still snow. The swiss call this hike Sportlich.

For those who like to shorten the hike with 2 hours there is a very small cable car which takes you from Attinghausen towards Brusti. These persons could walk ahead and/or wait for the group hiking up.

Unnecessary to say there are many spectacular views on the titlis, vierwalderstattersee etc.

We would take the 7.35 am train arriving 8.01 in zug, depart zug 8.05 arriving 8.48 in Altdorf and then depart at 9.03 am in Altdorf arriving at Attinghausen Seilbahn at 9.10 am

IMPORTANT

* The organizer is not responsible for any bodily injury or other accidents that might happen during the hike. By signing up on this activity, the participants agree that the organizer will not be held responsible in any way. Although the hike is not complicated, it is each individual responsibility to ensure that they can do the hike and check out the trail.

* To avoid that persons sign up and then cancel last minute, a flat fee of 10 francs will be charged for persons cancelling within 72 hours before the start of the hike (i.e. cancellations on July 28 and later).

* To bring along: hiking boots, poles, rain gear, water, snack, lunch ( I suggest we take lunch on the trails although we can have stops at the various restaurants on the trail), smile, positive attitude, sun-cream, photo camera.

* In case the weather would be bad, this hike will not take place.

Hi Guys, Short update: Please update your RSVP accordingly by Wednesday morning. We meet at 7:15 on top of the platform no 4 Zürich HB.
Please have with you the ticket (one way) to Attinghausen Seilbahn already. As it´s a hot day please remember to have with you enough water. Also small update on numbers :) I´m not the best number person, but had some support: going up from 469 m to 2290 m it´s 1822 m gain of hight. We end up in Engleberg (1100m) so it´s 1290 m down. As I´m not as fast as Patrick the group can of course do the 9.5 h and can take the train around 20:00 from Engelberg direction Zürich. For the slower part please be aware that the last train direction Zürich is 22:45. As it´s a long day we won´t wait for each other in Engelberg. In case you can´t find us please call me: 0797926726. Cheers and see you all on Thursday morning :)

Hi, Sorry, can't make it...went hiking the last 3 weekends, and my knees were starting to hurt this weekend, so I think I should take the next week off. Viel Spass!

Unfortunately something came up and I can no longer make it. Would have loved to go. I do not want to cancel this hike since it is really beuatiful so suggest that maybe Ola and/or others who attended several hikes with meet up, take over the organization for the day.

No worries, if it´s a nice one I can repeat it but probably not in your speed :)

Hi Patrick, i was waiting for confirmation of some friends but they cannot come. I would like to join your hike if it is still possible. Kindly ask you to keep me in hold in case somebody cancel their attendance in last minute.
    Thank you!

A classic hike they say - can't wait! I'll opt for the Luftseilbahn to Brüsti though, saving 3.5 hrs of uphill hiking. Still leaves 6 hrs to get up to Surenenpass and then down to Engelberg - which is how you'll find it recommended in the internet.

accordingly the the cable car website its capacity over the given time is 48 people. It's 1st of August, nice restaurant on the top and you only arrive there after 9. I wouldn't be so optimistic ;)

Eva I understand that you want to shorten the hike. But as Martin points out on August 1st you might have to queue. As the path from the bus stop till Brüsti is described as nice and as I like to hike, I personally prefer to hike up the whole way. According to my calculation tool schweizmobil.ch (based on the speed of an average hiker) the time for that part is only 3 hours. Anyway the entire hike is long, we certainly will have fun doing it all.

Hiked up to Jochpass (2209m) last weekend, there was indeed some snow, but it was not bad at all. I saw people with tennis shoes and without poles, and they were even fine.

I did this hike in early July this year, there is still quite a bit of snow above 2000 m but it is well worth the effort - most of it should be gone by early august anyway.
