Schweizer Passwanderung - Alperschaelliluecke

This hike takes us through one of the most isolated and surprising parts of Graubuenden. It starts with a (very) winding bus ride to Turahus, followed by a modest climb to 2614m, a rather long descent through a scraggy land, ending in the waters of the Sufnersee. On the way up we'll be able to stop along the Surettasee, but there are no huts along the way.

The hike takes about 6-6.5 hours, with 920m up and 1200m of descent through rocky terrain. We will stop for a snack every 1.5 hours. Solid hiking boots are recommended, as are poles for the long descent.

The plan would be to:

- Take the 6.37am train from Zurich to Chur. We arrive at Turahus after two changes, including a winding bus ride.

- We arrive at 9.18, and work our way up at a leisurely pace, taking short breaks every 1-1.5 hours.

- At the top of the pass, we will have the option of climbing Alperschaellihorn
(3039m), at the cost of 1.5 hours (you need hard climbing boots for that climb).

- Walk down to the Sufernsee, with time to cool down and enjoy the views (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/14166492).

Please bring with you:

- A one way ticket to Thalkirch, Turahus; Return from Sufers

- Plenty of water, snacks, and a packed lunch.

- Sun, wind, and/or rain protection depending on the weather.

- Good hiking / climbing boots. Hiking poles would be useful for the long descent.

- Swimming gear, if you wish to dip in the Sufnersee.

- The ability to stay in a group and the desire to celebrate together at the end.

Note: For some pictures of the region, look here: http://www.hikr.org/gallery/photo1176844.html?post_id=68216#1. As always, use common sense in estimating if you can do this hike, before signing up.

Folks - just a quick note that I'll be rescheduling this cancelled meetup (Alperschaelliluecke) for Sunday 25 August, should any of you wish to try it.
