Underground hiking........

It's November, what to do? It's too cold and the weather rubbish so can't go hiking. There's not enough snow to go skiing. Lets go underground!

Hoelloch Glitzertor One Day Cave Expedition

Info

Discover the magical Hoelloch world on one of our day expeditions securely run by a SSH certified cave guide. To date some 200km of cave corridors hold a unique variety of styles and provide answers to numerous secrets.

How is a cave formed? Why is Hoelloch so big? Is there life in darkness? Experience in fast motion the historical geological association and enjoy the tranquillity of the underground lakes.

Along the 9 hour expedition to "Glitzertor", we follow the immense main corridor up to the huge hall. From there we ascend to "Dombiwak" where we stop for a break. After reaching "Dombiwak", we have a further 2 hours to explore other fascinating corridors. For example we reach "Schlange" (snake) – another Hoelloch highlight – a 300 meter natural slide that is immense fun! From there we enter in to "Aeolsgang" leading us to the legendary huge hall and from there we gradually make our way back.

These demanding tours are led by professional, SSH (Schweizerische Schule Hoehlenbefahrungen Hoelloch) certified cave guides only. SSH, a cave guide and explorer training center, equips participants in demanding courses for their future leadership role as guides.

Please note: do not enter the cave with your travel clothes. Travel clothes and other items such as kit bags, toiletries, handbags, etc. are to left in cars or at the Hoelloch restaurant. At the restaurant there are changing rooms available. If you do not want to hire cave explorer protective overalls, then please ensure that you have clothes that are robust enough to endure wear & tear. Ideal are: thermo vest, thin polo neck jumper, overalls or old jeans / trousers, pullover / thermal fleece jacket, thick socks. Not suitable are track suits, rain shields, etc.

Prerequisites

Both expeditions can be accomplished with a normal level of fitness and surefootedness. These cave excursions are similar to trackless mountain tours. Exposed areas are firmly secured with ropes, ladders, styles, etc.

What to Bring

Please take old, warm clothes with you, e.g. jeans, sweater, fleece jacket (these will get dirty and might get strained). Alternative: Rental of Cave Explorer Overall (CHF 20.00 per person). Also required: thick socks in order to avoid cold feet in the boots.
Under your clothes / the overall cave: ideally long thermal underwear (shirt / throusers), a turtleneck sweater and a pair of leggings is of course also possible. The cave temperature is a constant 6 degrees Celsius all year round. Air humidity is nearly 100%. Bear in mind that although it appears to be quite cool, we will be perspiring, because we are mostly on the move. Optional: you might want to bring an additional warm jacket you can use during lunch break/when you will not be in move.
Robust Rucksack as well as Lunch & Refreshments in Plastic or Metal Bottles
Per two participants: One 4.5 Volt (flat) Reserve Battery for the Lamp

Schedule
The expedition to Glitzertor approximately 9 hours. Starting time for both tours is 09.00h with breakfast at Restaurant Hoelloch in Muotathal, Stalden. The expedition to Glitzertor finishes at approximately 18.30h.

Trains:
Zurich HB to Arth-Goldau, Dep 07:09, Arr 07:48

Schwyz to Muotathal, Holloch (Bus), Dep 08:06, Arr 08:38

How much?

Hi Simona! Sorry too hear that you don't feel that well - but in that case I would like to go instead of you. Give me please the details for the transfer, or if you prefer, I'll be on Saturday in Basel (around SBB area morning -early afternoon) and can give you cash.

    November 15, 2012

Hi Marija, I already paied... yesterday I got a tooth extraction and I feel bit weak for the time being...if you wish, you could go at my place and reimburse me the cost! Let me know if interested! ciao Simona

    November 15, 2012

  • Marija

Is there by any chance one more place? Just saw this event.... I would pay then on the day if possible

    November 15, 2012

  • Juri A.

Hi Tom, does the tour company also provide headlamps and helmets? Is there climbing involved in the activity? Do we then need harness & carabiners?

    November 14, 2012

  • Tom H.

I have just paid for 24 of us for the tour on Sunday. If I receive further payments I can pay in cash on the day (Melissa and Patricia). We need to bring our own lunch and take it with us into the cave. There are no restaurants in the cave!! Bear in mind the tour lasts for 9 hours so please bring enough food so you're not hungry!

Batteries! The tour company confirmed we need to provide one 4.5 volt battery per approximately two participant. 10 spare batteries for the group is apparently sufficient. I will buy the ten batteries on Friday (7.50 each) and ask everyone to contribute 3 francs on the day and they can be shared out accordingly. This is unless someone lets me know they already purchased the appropriate battery.

Thanks and looking forward to Sunday,
    Tom

    November 13, 2012

    • Kathleen

Hi Tom I have such a battery already. thanks.

      November 13, 2012

    • Kathleen

Battery for me too please. Sorry Tom, I double-checked. I dont have the right battery. If you could bring one for me too that would be great.

      November 14, 2012

  • Tom H.

Sarvesh and others, if cash is transferred to me tonight I can add you to the list. Please let me know when you transfer the cash so I can let the tour company know. Thanks Tom

Hi Tom, sorry for being so late, but is it possible to join still. I can initiate transfer right now, and you should get it tomorrow.

    November 12, 2012

  • Tom H.

Received payments from ankita, Christina, Simona and mircea over the weekend plus I'm expected a payment from Francis (x2) to clear tomorrow. I will advise the tour company there will be 23 of us on the day. Please let me know if I've missed you. Thanks

    November 12, 2012

  • Simona

Dear Tom, payment done today. I will join you all in Schwyz (coming from basel). Thanks for organizing it! Ciao

    November 8, 2012

  • Kathleen

Battery? sorry to be a pain. They right "Per two participants: One 4.5 Volt (flat) Reserve Battery for the Lamp" but it is not clear if we need to bring it or they provide it. It seems to be under an 'optional' section of sorts. thanks

    November 8, 2012

  • Ankita S.

    Hello Tom
Thanks for organizing the event. I have transferred the amount and and will hopefully be transferred to your account by tomorrow or by monday. See you then

    November 8, 2012

  • Tom H.

Breakfast IS definitely included, I'll check about lunch

    November 8, 2012

  • Kathleen

Hi Tom thanks for organising and keeping track of all the payments and such. It is not clear from the description above if lunch is inlcuded. It says "Robust Rucksack as well as Lunch & Refreshments in Plastic or Metal Bottles" but do we bring that ourselves or they provide it?

    November 8, 2012

  • Tom H.

Hi all, so far i have received payments for 16 people: Manuel Weiss, Manal, Birgitta, David Baudouin, Wifried Maps, Hanna, Kathleen, Claire Churchill, Axel M, Juri A, Jan Srzednicki (x2), Ellen, Mark, Bruno and Krzysztof. Please can the remainder of the payments be received before the weekend. Thanks Tom

  • Tom H.

Vashek. What size boots and jacket would you need? I'll ask.

    November 5, 2012

  • Vashek

hi Tom, would participate - just have 2 practical issues.
i am 6'8'' - will they have any top (just don't want to tear my jacket)? i guess I will have to bring my own boots.
    thanks.

    November 5, 2012

  • Tom H.

Please note, boots are included in the price.

    October 31, 2012

  • Mark

Hi Tom, thanks for organising. Quick question: you mentioned thick socks, but are boots provided? If not, what should we plan to bring?

    October 31, 2012

  • Tom H.

Please note, the price does not include train fares

    October 31, 2012

  • Tom H.

Hi, just a gentle reminder that to confirm your place on the trip please transfer CHF[masked] by the end of the day on Friday. Thanks

    October 31, 2012

  • Tom H.

Matteo, each group with one guide will be between 6 and 10 people. As a large group we all get 10% discount

    October 29, 2012

  • Matteo

whow, I want to become a cave guide ... 50 people * 200CHF = 10,000CHF a day! Why so much CHF where there are with so many people?

    October 26, 2012

  • Tom H.

To confirm your place on the tour please transfer[masked] francs per person to my account on or before Friday 9 November. I need to confirm final numbers and pay the tour company on the Monday 12 November. Please add anything additional if your bank charges for transfers (i think this relates to those who use post bank). My bank account details are:

    account number:[masked]A

    BIC: UBSWCHZH80A

    IBAN: CH[masked] 9640 H

for me the following werkend would be more convenient: [masked]) is anyone interested in organising the same for another date?

    October 8, 2012

  • Tom H.

The caving company has confirmed that many more people can be taken into the caves on a particular day. Each group is 6-10 people per guide so we can decide how many groups/guides we need on the day. :)

    October 8, 2012

  • Tom H.

Given the number of people on the waiting list I will see if its possible to have more than one group. Thanks
