Starting on Friday, October 23, CivCity and the A2 Game Designers Meetup are teaming up to co-host a game jam at Workantile in Ann Arbor! This game jam is open to game development of all kinds, including but not limited to: video games, board games, and card games. Come solo or with a team. To better accommodate your busy schedules, this game jam is mostly remote, with a kickoff event on Friday and a presentation event on Sunday.

Civ What?
CivCity is a new nonprofit that’s working to increase awareness about how local government works and to motivate people to get involved in civic life. Being an expert on local issues is not required to participate in this jam, but any knowledge that you have of Ann Arbor can be put to good use.

What’s in it for me?
Unlike most game jams, we won’t pick a single winner that will get all the glory. Instead, we’re giving every game a spotlight at an TBA Ann Arbor Public Library event. We’re still working out the details, but at some point all games created at the jam will be displayed prominently at a library-sponsored event and available for anyone to play!

That’s great! But seriously, how much can I win?
If showcasing your game to hundreds of library visitors isn’t enough incentive, we’ll also have a raffle that gives one team the chance to win a $100 cash prize. The only condition for entry is that your team completes your game by the Sunday deadline and follows the rules presented at the Friday kickoff.

How long will I have to make my game?
This is a weekend-long game jam, but you’ll only need to be at Workantile for a total of two hours. On Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., we’ll have an hour-long kickoff event. Mary Morgan, the founder of CivCity, will give a brief presentation to introduce participants to the theme and answer any questions. Then, we’ll go our separate ways and reconvene with our finished games on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Each team will give a brief demo of their game and then the winner of the raffle will be announced.

Workantile will be open until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday in case your team wants to decide on a game plan before leaving. You can also come on Sunday as early as 12:00 p.m. to finish your games together.

Workantile is downtown on the west side of Main Street, between Washington and Huron. The address is 118 S. Main St.

Please RSVP on our Meetup page. See you all there!
