Beginner backpacking trip

I want to do this event partly for some of the people who are going to Kili, and mostly cause it's fun! We will begin from the Silver lake parking lot and backpack the 7 miles to Blind lake... We will tent overnight... On Sunday, we will backpack the 5 miles back to Silver lake... YOU must have a backpack or you will not be allowed to come... We will have a Pre-meeting Tues or Wed before... If this is your first time backpacking and you can't make the meeting, I will contact you to discuss the basics... Sharing tents make the hike easier... Less weight for 1 person to bring in their backpack... I will post a link for a google doc for gear... To find our meeting spot: enter through Silver Hill rd and keep driving as far back as you can go (DO NOT go towards Crooked lake campground, if you are on a dirt rd you have headed the wrong way)... When you reach the farthest back parking lot turn right and head towards the lake itself... Park as close as possible to the lake... Facing the lake, to your left is the trail entrance... We will start there... Call me if you get lost 7346256681...

Looking at the trail map... I think I have found a trail: http://www.michigantrailmaps.com/Washtenaw/PinckneyRA/EnlargedPinckneymap.html Once we meet at Silver lake, we will park at Half moon lake... Then pick up the trail between 9 and 8... We will hike 8 to 3 to 4 to 6 to 5 to 7 to 1 to 2 and into Crooked lake (if you are confused, please looked at the map posted)... I follow this route because hikers go one direction, bikers the opposite... It's at least 7 miles, those struggling can take a shorter route... On day 2, we will hike 9 to 20 to 11 to 12 to Hankerd rd and back to Half moon... Sorry but this loop is longer... At least 7-8 miles...

Hi everyone! I know a few of us were looking at the sawyer filter system. It's $20 cheaper on amazon right now just as an FYI~ I'm thinking about breaking down and getting on for that price and weight! :D

Water filtration is important, because if you think digging a hole with a trowel and shedding light on YOUR situation is awkward.. just imagine having to do it ever 10 minutes ;-P Also, tapeworms that freeload in your intestines and parasites that eat your brain like lil' assholes should be a motivating factors as well.

So, any water filtration action should not be taken lightly and all steps and processes followed with the utmost care and scrutiny.. but this particular system while amazingly effective, efficient and lightweight deserves specific note that the possibility of cross-contaminating the clean and dirty areas is separated by about 3 inches of water filter. Educate yourself, have good discipline no matter what the system and practice at home often so you get your routines and technique down!

There are a lot of cars here. Don't be put off by the cones, you can keep going to the lake.. The lot is full but people are leaving slowly but surely.

I know it's a little late but I just thought of it/only just now had enough time to actually THINK about anything other than work and whatever new stress I have going on :P but here are some nice references for new backpackers created by my workplace, REI.

An overview of backpacking and what to expect:
    http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacking-beginners.html

A checklist of things to pack:
    http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacking-checklist.html

Tips on how to pack a backpack effectively (complete with video)
    http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/loading-backpack.html

Finally, a guide (also with video) on how to properly adjust and fit your backpack (remember, the weight is on the hips!)

Don't be afraid to ask last minute questions, we were ALL new once ;-)

    See you all tomorrow!

    Hey Caryn,
Not sure if you're aware but the Pinckney Trail Series runs take place Sat & Sun. The half and full are both run on the Poto.

      April 25, 2013

    • Caryn ;.

I tried to host an event at Half moon lake last year... At least half the people got lost... Silver lake it's much much easier to chorale people... The Silver lake parking lot is big enough....

    April 24, 2013

Caryn moved this event to Crooked Lake (in case anyone missed the e-mail). At least we can presumably have a campfire there, if she doesn't take my saw away.

fyi, this could be the last chance to have a campfire at Blind Lake. Through some insane decision, they're changing the rules on May 1st and eventually taking out the fire rings :-(

    April 17, 2013

    • Caryn ;.

No... It doesn't... Smokie the bear is gonna come get you!

    Hi Caryn,
I'm interested in joining you on this mostly to meet fellow backpackers. I'm pretty experienced but don't know anyone in the area (that backpacks that is). Most of my fellow backpackers live out west which is where I usually go though I have done most of what MI offers....including several trips to Isle Royale that you mentioned. Assuming the timing works out for me I would be happy to assist in any planning you need. Wasn't sure if you were doing group meals or not for instance. Also, thinking of planning a backpack with your pup trip for those with dogs. The poto (Pickney rec area) is one of the few places you can take your pooch, fyi. Let me know what you are interested in.
    Thanks for organizing this.
    John
