Day Hike: Pleasant Pheasant Hill, Hambledon, Henley & banks of the River Thames
- Banks of the Thames
- Hambleden Mill & weir
- Temple Island
- Red Kites
- Filming location of Band of Brothers
- Henley upon the Thames
This relaxed hike starts and finishes from Henley on the Thames.
The River Thames features in the first quarter of this figure of 8 hikes as we amble along the manicured left bank of the river, passing the picturesque Temple Island. The Henley Regatta takes place on this stretch in the first week of July. Next is a river crossing and up into Ridge Woods, where we get glimpses of Hambledon and probably many Red Kites. We will then drop down to Pheasants Hill, depleted of the bird by the same name, probably due to the population of Red Kites, before we enter the picturesque village of Hambleden (often used in filming).
On leaving the village, we contour along the side of the valley, with fine views, before crossing the Thames over the weir at Hambleden Mill and walking across the watermeadows to Aston. The final leg takes us over part of Remenham Hill through patches of woodland and into Henley for a rehydration stop before the train home.
This is a great walk on which to see red kites, a once nearly-extinct bird of prey that was reintroduced to the Chilterns, who circle overhead with their haunting cries throughout the walk.
