Barefoot BBQ History:

In 2001, two great causes collided into one grand idea for Luke Revell.

Luke likes to run. Sometimes when he went out for a run, he found himself passing by one of San Diego’s Monarch schools, which meets the needs of homeless children. Luke also likes to give, and he had already decided to participate in “One Day Without Shoes”, a global movement to raise awareness for children’s health and education sponsored every year by Tom’s Shoes.

Now, anyone who runs knows that while you are running, there is not much else to do but think. So that’s what he did. Luke thought of the youth that are in need right here in San Diego. And he thought of the great impact that Tom’s Shoes makes in the lives of children around the world. Then he thought it would be a great idea to throw a BBQ to make money to buy shoes for those children who are in need right here in his hometown… and, if he bought Tom’s Shoes with the money that was raised, he’d be helping children around the world at the same time!

So that’s what he did.

That first year, the Barefoot BBQ, named in honor of the “One Day Without Shoes” event that inspired it, raised enough money for Luke to buy nine pairs of Tom’s Shoes for San Diego foster youth. This year, Luke is hoping to buy enough Tom's gift cards for every foster youth in the program.

Luke had no idea how much work it would take to pull off the first Barefoot BBQ – or how hard it would be to find an organization willing to let him give them Tom’s Shoes! But he is passionate about showing children who are in need in San Diego that they live in a community that cares. “I remember when I was a kid that those light-up shoes were the coolest shoes to have, and I never had them,” Luke says. “Today, Tom’s Shoes are the coolest shoes to have, and I want every needy child in San Diego to have them!”

Many individuals and organizations are joining Luke this year to make sure this event is both memorable and profitable. Tom’s Shoes is now a major sponsor, partnering with Luke for the past two years to make sure this event continues to grow. Tom’s gift cards will be purchased with all proceeds from the event, and the children registered with the San Diego Foster Youth Mentoring Program will be the recipients of the Tom’s Shoes gift cards.

Barefoot BBQ – putting way cool shoes on the feet of foster youth in San Diego, while raising awareness of the need for children’s health and education around the world.

I'll be MCing the event from the stage, so I'll be pretty easy to find, but I'll designate an area for all who attend from here so you can find each other :) Look for a big sign that says SAM (Social Activities Meetup)!! Bring blankets and chairs and stay a while! There will be some AWESOME and WAY CHEAP auction opportunities - and many of San Diego's foster youth will be there - YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS EVENT IS AWESOME - THANKS!

Hi Tali! You can absolutely bring any animals that are on leashes... And the event runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.. I didn't set a meeting time, but there will be an area designated by a sign that says SAM for the Social Activities Meetup group, so that you can all find each other. You will find it under a blue canopy that I will be bringing for you all to have some shade. You will want to bring your own chairs and blankets. I will be MCing the event so I will not be able to greet everybody right away, but will be easy to find :)

Thanks Jen :) I've been a mentor for at-risk youth for many years. I'm proud to be on the Executive Committee for this event and how we get to bless many of San Diego's forgotten kids. The 17-year old boy I mentor now has lived in 10 different group homes since he was 3 :(
