Barefoot BBQ History:
In 2001, two great causes collided into one grand idea for Luke Revell.
Luke likes to run. Sometimes when he went out for a run, he found himself passing by one of San Diego’s Monarch schools, which meets the needs of homeless children. Luke also likes to give, and he had already decided to participate in “One Day Without Shoes”, a global movement to raise awareness for children’s health and education sponsored every year by Tom’s Shoes.
Now, anyone who runs knows that while you are running, there is not much else to do but think. So that’s what he did. Luke thought of the youth that are in need right here in San Diego. And he thought of the great impact that Tom’s Shoes makes in the lives of children around the world. Then he thought it would be a great idea to throw a BBQ to make money to buy shoes for those children who are in need right here in his hometown… and, if he bought Tom’s Shoes with the money that was raised, he’d be helping children around the world at the same time!
So that’s what he did.
That first year, the Barefoot BBQ, named in honor of the “One Day Without Shoes” event that inspired it, raised enough money for Luke to buy nine pairs of Tom’s Shoes for San Diego foster youth. This year, Luke is hoping to buy enough Tom's gift cards for every foster youth in the program.
Luke had no idea how much work it would take to pull off the first Barefoot BBQ – or how hard it would be to find an organization willing to let him give them Tom’s Shoes! But he is passionate about showing children who are in need in San Diego that they live in a community that cares. “I remember when I was a kid that those light-up shoes were the coolest shoes to have, and I never had them,” Luke says. “Today, Tom’s Shoes are the coolest shoes to have, and I want every needy child in San Diego to have them!”
Many individuals and organizations are joining Luke this year to make sure this event is both memorable and profitable. Tom’s Shoes is now a major sponsor, partnering with Luke for the past two years to make sure this event continues to grow. Tom’s gift cards will be purchased with all proceeds from the event, and the children registered with the San Diego Foster Youth Mentoring Program will be the recipients of the Tom’s Shoes gift cards.
