Kayaking at La Jolla Shores - $16.50 ($15 + $1.50 tax) per person!

  • Mar 29, 2014 · 12:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Temperatures at the coast on Saturday will be in the upper 60s, with average surf conditions.

Join us at 12:45pm, and you may be able to see sea lions, bright orange Garibaldis and harmless leopard sharks. What you won't see is a tiny woman climbing up your paddle (see photo)

I love kayaking because you get a light workout, you catch some sun, and once in the water, you look back at a La Jolla coastline that is as breathtakingly beautiful as any coastline in the world!

Each week, absolute beginners join in...and soon realize there is nothing to it!  You don't have to be a good swimmer (we wear life jackets) but you should be comfortable in the water.

If you would like a preview of what this weekend's kayaking might be like, feel free to view the 2-minute video that I shot and edited in February, 2011:

For an even cooler experience, check out this video produced by OEX Dive and Kayak  (Everyday California's previous name):

If absolutely nobody else responds with a YES, I may cancel so call me beforehand if you decide at the last minute to participate.

***   THIS JUST IN ***

There will be a Waiting List.  If you learn that you will be unable to attend, please change your RSVP.  That will allow people on the Waiting List to participate.

Please, Please, PLEASE update your RSVP if you can't make it.  Recently, 2 people chose not to do so, and those NO SHOWs could have prevented people on the Waiting List from participating.

If you are a NO SHOW, you yourself may very well be prevented from participating in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

1)    WHEN AND WHERE?
We will meet at 12:45pm at Everyday California (formerly OEX Dive and Kayak), and head to the beach at 1:00pm sharp, no exceptionsEveryday California is located at 2243 Avenida de la Playa, at the corner of Paseo del Ocaso. The shop's phone number is 858.454.6195.  My cell is 858.922.5168.  I will shut it off at 12:45.

Please leave plenty of time for parking.  Our departure time for the beach cannot be pushed back!

2)    HOW DO WE GET THERE?  WHERE DO WE PARK?
Take La Jolla Shores Drive to Avenida de la Playa, and turn east (away from the beach).  You will then see ample residential parking.  To get to Everyday California, simply walk across La Jolla Shores Drive.  The shop will be on your left, before the next intersection. The parking spots across from Everyday California are good for only 90 minutes, even on Sundays.

3)    HOW MUCH?
We are back to pre-summer, special pricing!  Everyday California will charge us only $30 + tax for a double kayak ($15 + tax per person).  The cost per person is $16.50 ($15 + 1.50 tax).  If you don't have a partner, we will try to match you up at the shop.

If you choose to rent a wetsuit, the charge is $5 + tax.

Prices could double or triple in mid-May!

4)    WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?
Your rental includes the kayak, paddle, seat back and life jacket; in short, all that you will need.

Kayak rentals are for 2 hours.  The clock starts running the moment the last person in our group gets into the water.

You cannot bring your own kayak to this activity. For reasons involving liability, we must use equipment provided by Everyday California.

5)    WHAT SHOULD WE BRING TO THE SHOP?
Everyday California has dressing rooms, cubby holes and a bathroom but there are no lockers.  Thus, you should bring only essential items.  When I go kayaking, I wear only shorts.  Some of you may choose to wear shorts and a T-shirt.  Bring a towel and dry clothing so you can change after kayaking.

Don't forget to bring sunscreen.  In addition to your face and your arms, it will be your ankles and the tops of your feet that will be most exposed to the sun for 2 hours so you'll want to 'drown' them in sunscreen.

The staff will look after any valuables (wallets, car keys, etc.).

6)    WHAT SHOULD WE NOT BRING INTO THE KAYAK?
Do not bring anything into the kayak that is not attached to you.  There is a slight chance that you could capsize.  If you do, it will most likely be in less than 2 feet of water so you'll be OK but anything that is not attached to you (glasses, camera, keys, hat) will be lost.  If you wear glasses, consider buying an inexpensive strap to keep them in place.

7)    WHAT IS THE DRILL?
When you arrive at Everyday California, say you're with the MeetUp Group, and pay for the rental.  They will have you sign a release form.  I will give some advice at the shop (what should be left on land, etc.), and then we'll walk down to the beach to claim our kayaks.  Once we get to the beach, I will provide some simple pointers.  Please note that rented kayaks are NOT allowed inside the caves. If you take a rented kayak inside the caves, you may incur a hefty fine. Have no fear, however...we'll paddle right past those caves.

See you at Everyday California!
