Kayaking at La Jolla Shores

  • Sep 15, 2012 · 11:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Temperatures at the coast on Saturday will be in the low 90s(!!!), with average surf conditions.

Join us at 11:15, and you may be able to see sea lions, bright orange Garibaldis and harmless leopard sharks. What you won't see is a tiny woman climbing up your paddle (see photo)!

I love kayaking because you get a light workout, you catch some sun, and once in the water, you look back at a La Jolla coastline that is as breathtakingly beautiful as any coastline in the world!

Each week, absolute beginners join in...and soon realize there is nothing to it! You don't have to be a good swimmer (we wear life jackets) but you should be comfortable in the water.

If you would like a preview of what this weekend's kayaking might be like, feel free to view the 2-minute video that I shot and edited in February, 2011:

For an even cooler experience, check out this video produced by OEX Dive and Kayak:

If absolutely nobody else responds with a YES, I may cancel so call me beforehand if you decide at the last minute to participate.

*** THIS JUST IN ***

As Labor Day has come and gone, several of the summer restrictions have disappeared. Thus, we are no longer limited to only 10 kayakers!

However, due to unexpectedly high demand, we will allow only 20 people to go out at once. Thus, there will be a Waiting List. If you learn that you will be unable to attend, please change your RSVP so that people on the Waiting List will be able to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) WHEN AND WHERE?
We will meet at 11:15 at OEX Dive and Kayak, and head to the beach at 11:30 sharp. OEX Dive and Kayak is located at 2243 Avenida de la Playa, at the corner of Paseo del Ocaso. The shop's phone number is 858.454.6195. My cell is 858.922.5168. I will shut it off at 11:15.

2) HOW DO WE GET THERE? WHERE DO WE PARK?
Take La Jolla Shores Drive to Avenida de la Playa, and turn east (away from the beach). You will then see ample residential parking. To get to OEX Dive and Kayak, simply walk across La Jolla Shores Drive. The shop will be on your left, before the next intersection. The parking spots across from OEX Dive and Kayak are good for only 90 minutes, even on Sundays.

3) HOW MUCH?
Only double-kayaks are available. OEX Dive and Kayak has granted us special pricing. They will charge us only $30 for a double ($15 per person). If you don't have a partner, we will try to match you up at the shop. If you choose to rent a wetsuit, the charge is $5.

4) WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?
Your rental includes the kayak, paddle, seat back and life jacket; in short, all that you will need.

Kayak rentals are for 2 hours. The clock starts running the moment the last person in our group gets into the water.

You can no longer bring your own kayak to this activity. For reasons involving liability, we must use equipment provided by OEX.

5) WHAT SHOULD WE BRING TO THE SHOP?
OEX Dive and Kayak has dressing rooms, cubby holes and a bathroom but there are no lockers. Thus, you should bring only essential items. When I go kayaking, I wear only shorts. Some of you may choose to wear shorts and a T-shirt. Bring a towel and dry clothing so you can change after kayaking.

Don't forget to bring sunscreen. In addition to your face and your arms, it will be your ankles and the tops of your feet that will be most exposed to the sun for 2 hours so you'll want to 'drown' them in sunscreen.

The staff will look after any valuables (wallets, car keys, etc.).

6) WHAT SHOULD WE NOT BRING INTO THE KAYAK?
Do not bring anything into the kayak that is not attached to you. There is a slight chance that you could capsize. If you do, it will most likely be in less than 2 feet of water so you'll be OK but anything that is not attached to you (glasses, camera, keys, hat) will be lost. If you wear glasses, consider buying an inexpensive strap to keep them in place.

7) WHAT IS THE DRILL?
When you arrive at OEX Dive and Kayak, say you're with the MeetUp Group and pay for the rental. I will give some advice in the shop (what should be left on land, etc.), and then we'll walk down to the beach to claim our kayaks. I will provide some simple pointers once we get to the beach. Please note that rented kayaks are NOT allowed inside the caves. If you take a rented kayak inside the caves, you may incur a hefty fine. Have no fear, however...we'll paddle right past those caves.

We had to cancel kayaking way back in October of 2009 because of rough seas caused by high winds (15 knots). It was the only time that choppy seas have caused a cancellation. I feel bad because one member came down from Vista, and two people even drove from Temecula!

To prevent this from happening again, please call the recorded Beach Weather Report [masked]) on the day we go kayaking in order to learn whether conditions could prevent us from going out.

If the Report mentions "stormy seas" or winds GREATER THAN 10 knots, call OEX Kayak [masked]) or me [masked]) to confirm that we're still 'good to go'. I doubt whether we'll experience a repeat but BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

See you at OEX Dive and Kayak!

It was such a beautiful day! Great to get out of the heat of La Mesa! Wish I had a mask and snorkle 'cause that would have been the best!

We had an absolutely amazing time!

We saw bright orange Garibaldis, loud and smelly sea lions and more leopard sharks than you could shake a stick (or, for the more adventurous, a leg!) at.

Air temperature was in the low 90s but water temperature was in the high 60s, and a lot of us slipped off our kayaks to cool down, and swim/float in the delightful conditions.

This could very well have been the best outing of the year, and the participants deserve a lot of credit for having made it so enjoyable.

    You guys were great!

  • glen o.

I have my own tandem kayak if anyone is interested in partnering

    September 14, 2012

    • Henry

      Glen, Thanks for the offer.

However, we'll have to meet you at the beach as liability considerations prevent us from using equipment other than that provided by OEX.

We will be renting OEX's bright yellow kayaks, and we should be at the water before noon. Feel free to call me on my cell before 11:15am: 858.922.5168. As you will be considered "separate" from the rest of the group for rental purposes, please change your RSVP to NO so as to allow one extra person to avoid the Waiting List.

Glen, as we are running out of time before the event, I have taken the liberty of removing your name from the RSVPs so that if a couple was thinking of joining us, they would not have to be worried about being consigned to the Waiting List.

      Nothing personal :)

Are there age restrictions on this? Would like to bring my girls (10&13).

    September 13, 2012

    • Henry

Chris, that should work. OEX has life jackets for kids.

Each girl should have an adult in her kayak.

Jazz, I anticipate that other people will also be coming solo. Once we meet up at OEX, I'll pair up the 'soloists' :)

    1115? New time!

    September 13, 2012

    • Henry

      Yes, Rebecca...new time.

I like mixing things up a bit so that no one is unable to attend because of a regular commitment of theirs.
