Cave Kayaking at Channel Islands

BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR NAME FOR THE WAITING LIST ON THE TRIP, DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE ANOTHER ONE ON SEPTEMBER 28? CHECK IT OUT: http://www.meetup.com/adventure-us/events/126513852/

This is going to be the best day trip of the summer: Let’s go sea cave Kayaking at the beautiful Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands.

Last year we did a great kayaking outing to the beautiful La Jolla caves. The outing was great, except that because of the surf we weren't able to get inside the caves.

The great thing about Channel Island, and particularly this trip, is that we are almost guaranteed to be able to go in the caves. We are going to Scorpion Anchorage, which is on the calm side of the island, at a very protected area. Unless we happen to go on an unusually choppy day, Aquasports told me it is almost guaranteed that we will be able to go in.

Some of the most beautiful sea caves in the world can be found at Scorpion Anchorage. Here’s what the official National Park website has to say about it:

The area of the park that is most popular for sea kayaking is centered around Scorpion Beach on East Santa Cruz Island. This location is a world class destination for sea kayaking because of easy beach access, clear ocean waters, nearby camping, readily available concessionaire boat transportation service and a spectacular shoreline with beautiful sea cave and cliffs to explore.

Perfect! :-)

Itinerary: We’ll meet at the Ventura Harbor at 7:30 am for check-in. The boat pulls away from the dock at 8:00. It takes about an hour to cross the channel unless we see dolphins or whales, in which case they’ll take a little time to follow along and talk about them.

When you get to the island it takes an hour or so to get over to the kayaks, get fitted for gear and to get the basic kayaking lesson and safety talk. Then you go on the water with the guides along the cliffs in one direction, exploring the beautiful sea caves as you go. At some point you turn around and come back past the landing area and explore in the other direction. We’ll be in the water 2.5 to 3 hours.

We’ll then return to the beach to eat lunch, and you can go walking up the canyon or along the cliff-tops, or maybe get in a little snorkeling.

The regular price is[masked] per person. As always, we are getting out Adventure-Us group discount and will be paying[masked] American Dollars. THAT INCLUDES THE FERRY RIDE TO THE ISLAND.

Here are some important points:

- Bring your own lunch (Aquasports is not permitted by the Park to supply food).

- Although we are very likely to be able to get in the caves, there is no guarantees, as heavy surf may prevent us from going in safely.

- Bring beach clothes, but also warm clothes, as the ferry ride will be cold.

We are very excited about tomorrow and can't wait to meet all of you. Joyce and I usually kayak around Marina del Rey harbor although I tend to go out beyond the brakes and up the coast a bit very peaceful. This looks like an incredible adventure and we are happy to be apart of Adventure Us.

I also enjoy canyoning, skydiving, scuba diving, hand gliding and other adventure sports. See you all tomorrow.

Hi Eduardo - I think I need to cancel. I have already paid. Do I have any recourse? I see that there are people waiting - I would hate to take a spot that someone else could have (not to mention lose my money). Can you let me know? Thanks, Penny

Anyone wants to carpool from Pasadena/Alhambra area?

    June 19, 2013

    • Joe

Hi, Lily. I am in Sherman Oaks, which is along the way. We (and anyone else in the Burbank/Glendale/Sherman Oaks/Encino etc) area could find a meeting point to carpool from. You're probably about 20 miles East of me, and then the place we're going to is about 50-60 miles West of me.
