Backpack Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park coast

  • May 24, 2013 · 5:00 PM

Since Brent’s backpacking meetup is full, I’m concocting an alternate backpacking trip. ;)

Itinerary for the trip is as follows:
Fri-depart Seattle. Car camp overnight near Port Angeles
Sat-Obtain permit at 7am, drive 1 1/2 hrs to Rialto Beach and hike 4.5 miles to Chilean Memorial, stay overnight.
Sun-Hike 3 miles to Cedar Creek, drop packs and dayhike up to Norwegian Memorial, camp overnight at Cedar Creek
Mon-depart at 7am and hike 7.5 miles back to trailhead and drive back to Seattle

I am sorry Namhee. Lots of good organizers have quit organizing due to poor attendance. It's very easy to log on and un-RSVP from a hike. I'm going after people with poor attendance this summer. I promise.

I'm sorry I didn't change my rsvp in time, I wasn't feeling well yesterday or today. I hope you have fun. Vicky

I see you were cross-posted on my overnight hike last weekend also and no-showed either hike. Very rude. I doudt you were too sick to log on and un-RSVP yourself. That is all that is requested.

My first 100% no show (as opposed to the usual 50% no show). Still, a good time was had.

Hey Alice, not sure if I'm going to be able to make it but I am trying and am not able to use my phone right now and Internet connection in my neighborhood was down yesterday and has been iffy today. Also, I'm just putting my message here as there was no link to you directly on your message and don't have time to look around for it, and again, couldn't use my phone. If I think I can't make it, will definitely let you know but didn't want to leave you hanging. Thanks Kelly

Looks like some of you will be camping with multiple groups at the same time... Please teach me this trick ;)

Okay folks, I'm officially changing location for the trip. We'll be backpacking on the Olympic coast. New trip itinerary is as follows:
Fri-depart Seattle. Car camp overnight near Port Angeles
Sat-Obtain permit at 7am, drive to Rialto Beach and hike 4.5 miles to Chilean Memorial, stay overnight.
Sun-Hike 3 miles to Cedar Creek, drop packs and explore up to Norwegian Memorial, camp overnight at Cedar Creek
Mon-depart at 7am and hike 7.5 miles back to trailhead and drive back to Seattle

Please update your RSVPs if this changes your interest in going.

The weather is not looking so fantastic. I will make a final call on this trip by tomorrow. If weather forecast does not improve, I will likely relocate this backpacking trip to the Olympic Coast, most likely Rialto Beach area, since it similarly does not require reservations for permits.

We'll need a second driver, since Eric cancelled.

I've been wanting to do this, but am going to go camping instead.

I don't have room in my car for more than 4. We should not have to camp on snow. We'll need to obtain backpacking permit at Ranger station.

Yes, I noticed that after I sent you the above message and my opening probably came up because you cancelled. M involvement depends on the weather this weekend and whether or not I can get a ride.

I'm going to stay in town and join Michael for his hikes over the weekend. Hope you guys have a great time!

Anyone coming from West Seattle or the downtown Seattle area?

    May 20, 2013

  • Eric

Since neither of my posts have been answered and the doesn't seem to be a feasible plan for this trip I'm removing myself from this meet up.

I'm looking to do some strenuous and scenic hikes over this long weekend. Since this trip already has a long waiting list, is it possible to split the group into two smaller groups?

Namhee- will you be posting a definite itinerary and meeting place for driving Friday?

    May 18, 2013

  • Namhee P

I have increased number of participants by three per Eric's instructions (thanks, Eric!).

I would love to come then but I don't know if it's alright with the organizer who for some reason maybe has put a number limit on it.

Looks like my plans for the weekend are changing so I am releasing my spot now so someone else has time to plan and go.

Wondering how we're going to be able to hike in Friday night? We need to get permits. The office in PA closes at 5:00.

Did this hike last year, long, but a great trip... You should love it. Note: fishing is catch and release only

Do we need worry about any passes to go up there? Will we be camping in snow? I also know that we will need bear canisters for our food.
