Details
Here it is the longest MTB night ride yet: the entire skyline circuit around the hills of Wellington. Wellington winter evenings are often crisp and clear which makes for stunning vistas so this will be spectacular.
What we'll be doing
Meet outside the Southern Cross and head up polhill and across to Tinakori hill and down Trelissick park to Ngaio gorge and over to Mt KauKau.
From Mt Kaukau we head along the skyline walkway to Johnstons hill and then across to Makara peak. From Makara peak we cross over to Wrights Hill and around the sanctuary fenceline to the wind turbine. From here we’ll head up hawkins hill to the radar dome and back to the tip track.
After following the tip track (or we could ride the red rocks track) we head back to Happy Valley Road and along the southern walkway to Berhampore and across to Mt Victoria. Then, if we’re not too stuffed and the tyres not burnt out across to Mt Crawford for jailbreak and return to the South Cross for a refreshing beer or two.
Difficulty
8/10 – riding for 6-8 hours with three 300M + climbs, including a 445 metre climb up to Mt Kaukau, 45km of riding, 3000metres of climbing up and down at night. So a good level of fitness and endurance is required. The tracks can be very slippery when very dry or very wet, so good footwear is essential.
What to bring
Proper off-road mountain bike night lights are mandatory essential.
Your bike, woollen hat, wind and waterproof outer layer, something to drink and snacks, backup night lights. A cellphone is also useful.
Time
Meet at 5:00pm the Southern Cross tavern. ,Approx 6-8 hrs including short breaks.
In the event of wet weather or strong winds, we'll postpone this walk.
NO SHOW POLICY
If you no show or cancel after 7pm the night before this event you will have a 'no show' recorded against your name. No shows can lead to you having to leave the group. Please read our Group Rules.
