The skyline walkway is one of AW's and Wellington's most popular walks and now with the added extension of one the most challenging. The skyline track has some of the greatest views Wellington has to offer From the ridge tops you will experience stunning views of the entire city, Wellington Harbour, the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges, Porirua Basin and on a clear day across the Cook strait to the snow-capped Mount Tapuaenuku (2885m) in the Kaikoura ranges. Added to this you will enjoy the Wright's hill reserve and Karori sanctuary fence line before descending into the sunny Aro Valley. In total this walk should be approx. 30km.

What are We Going to Do:

The skyline Track runs 12km between Old coach Road in Johnsonville in the north to Karori in the south. Starting at Johnsonville station we will follow the outer green belt to the top of Mt Kaukau. After pausing to take in the views we follow the track across to the crow's nest, Kilmster tops, Johnston hill and down to Karori park. Once reaching Karori we head for Wrights Hill reserve before following the fence line track around the Karori sanctuary. The walk will end in the Aro Valley, a short walk from the city and a well deserved refreshment. With a combination of farm roads, single track, native forest and open grass areas there is plenty of variety along this long walk.

Difficulty:

7/10. Long and exposed walk involving some hill climbing; you need to have a very good level of fitness.

Duration:

7-8hrs of hiking (30km)+ lunch/stops

What to bring:

Weather on hill tops can quickly change so make sure you're equipped with warm clothes, wind/water-proof jacket, water, snacks and good walking shoes.

How to get there:

Catch the train from Wellington Station to Johnsonville. The walk will end in Aro Valley where a short bus ride/walk will take you back into town. Please see http://www.metlink.org.nz/ for details.

Thanks all for coming today. Hosting a walk is relatively easy when you have a great bunch of walkers.
Here's some stats for the day. Not quite 30km but that's probably cause I stopped it when we got to Aro Road opposed to when we got back in to town.

    Hi all
Weather is looking reasonably good for tomorrow. Forecast is for mostly fine weather (11-12°C) with morning and evening cloud and light to moderate SE winds.

Note that as there are a number of Oxfam walkers on this walk so we are going to try and maintain a quick pace of around 4.5-5km/hr over the entire 30km.

We will stop for a lunch break in Karori Park cafe which is right next to Karori Park. You can buy coffee and food here or you can have whatever you bring with you.
This is also a good point to exit the walk if you feel you can not complete the second half of the walk.

Please also bring plenty of water with you as there is no where to fill them until Karori Park.

See you all at Johnsonville station at 10am.
    Cheers

P.S. Any problems tomorrow morning flick me a txt[masked]

    Hi all
For those catching public transport out to Johnsonville Railway station you have 2 options:
    1) Bus number 54 (Churton Park) departs from the first stop on Courtenay Place at 9:16am and gets to Jville station at 9:37am.
    2) The Johnsonville Line train departs the train station at 9:32am and gets to Jville train station at 9:53am.

The standard fare for both is $5. Snapper card can not be used on either.
