Great combination of coast and ridge-lines with some of the best views the south coast has to offer.

We'll venture into the hills of the Te Kopahau Reserve, following the ridge-lines with great views over the wild south coast.

We will then descend down to The Red Rocks - an area of national significance with fascinating geology and Maori history. The Red Rocks are ancient pillow lava formed 200 million years ago by undersea volcanic eruptions. Small amounts of iron oxides give the rocks their distinctive coloring. Following the coastal track back to Owhiro Bay.

Difficulty: 6/10: strenuous walk with steep and exposed sections; a very good level of fitness is required. If you have any queries regarding your fitness please ask the host.

What to bring: Wind and waterproof outer, warm clothing - layers, something for lunch, water, sturdy shoes, camara.

Time: 4 hours

How to get there: We'll gather at the car park at intersection Owhiro Bay Parade / Happy Valley Road. Either follow Brooklyn Rd onto Ohiro Rd to the coast or take Adelaide Rd through Newtown all the way to Island Bay and follow the coast around till you get to Owhiro Bay Parade turnoff for Happy Valley.
