AW walks - Whakanui track

  • This location is shown only to members

If you're keen for a challenging day walk through beautiful natural bush, this one is for you. The Whakanui track takes us from Wainuiomata through to the Orongorongo river in the Rimutaka forest park. Beech forest dominates much of the Rimutaka Forest Park, joined by podocarps at lower altitudes. These forests support hundreds of indigenous plant species and provide habitat for a range of invertebrates, freshwater fish, reptiles and birds including reintroduced brown kiwi.

What we're doing:
Starting at the car park at the end of Hine Road the track begins by a slow steady climb to the long, flat ridge at about 560m. The ridgeline is in the middle of the Orongorongos and passes through podocarp/broadleaf forest for most of its length and has beautiful outlook either side. Great views of the main Rimutaka Range can be seen from the higher parts of the track (approx. 640m altitude). The track descends quickly from the ridgeline to the Orongorongo river beside a small creek. We follow the big bend, Orongorongo and Mile mile tracks to the catchpool carpark. Please note this is not a loop track.

Difficulty: 6/10 Fairly challenging - gentle up hill climbs with some likely muddy sections. 6-7 hours of walking so a good level of fitness is required.

Time: 6 - 7 hours including breaks and lunch.

What To Bring: Everyone must bring sturdy, suitable footwear such as hiking boots. A wind and waterproof jacket and layers of clothing which you can peel off as you get hot and put on again as you cool. Lunch and high energy snacks and drinking water. Remember that the weather in the hills can quickly change so the spare clothing and wet weather gear (regardless of forecast) are essential.

How to get there:

Public transport:

There is public transport to the beginning of this event. The 170 bus travels from Lower Hutt to Hine road in Wainuiomata. Please see for information on how to get there from your area.

Via car from Wellington:

1. Take SH2 to Petone. Follow signs leading to Wainuiomata Hill Road and Wainuiomata.

2. Proceed along Wainuiomata Rd/ Main Rd towards the Coast Road.

3. Hine road is a left at the roundabout

4. Drive to the carpark at the end of Hine road

Please note we will be organising some cars to be left at the catchpool carpark for our return journey to Wainuiomata. If you have a car and are able to help us out that would be greatly appreciated.
