Group Rules (new)

By continuing with your membership you agree to follow these rules and guidelines. If you don't agree with these rules you must not join the group. If you are already a member and you don't agree with these rules, you must delete your membership. Please note that these rules and guidelines are updated periodically. It is your own responsibility to ensure you are aware of any updates by reviewing this page at regular intervals.

When you sign on as a member of the group you understand that whilst events may be organised on a group basis, the attendees must be self-sufficient and make preparations and take precautions that they would do if doing the activity by themselves. Whilst every possible assistance will be offered, Adventure Wellington Trust, the Trustees, Event Organisers/hosts and members cannot be held responsible for any accident, injuries or losses sustained leading up to, during, or after an event.

The nature of the activities that Adventure Wellington involves itself in and the environments that we explore do inherently present risks and dangers. Adventure Wellington prides itself on a good safety record and seriously wishes to maintain that. We always want members to return from activities safe and well. Therefore, when you RSVP for an activity, please keep in mind the difficulty level and your own fitness and experience. We reserve the right to refuse people on events for not having the required fitness level or equipment for that particular event. Our events are not suitable for children unless stated otherwise.

We expect every member to come to AW events because they want to do fun, active and adventurous events in a safe environment with a great group of people. People with other motives are not welcome in this group. AW is certainly not a dating agency and any form of approaching other AW members with this motive in mind will mean deletion from the group. Harassment, in whatever manner or however small, is completely unacceptable in the group. The trustees takes every complaint very seriously and the offender will be deleted from the group without hesitation. Furthermore: any members who engage in any type of unlawful activity during an event will be deleted, banned from the group and the police will be notified.

If you would like to make a complaint about a member, please contact the trustees ( We are happy to hear your complaint and we will always take it seriously!

The trustees retains the exclusive right to suspend, delete or ban any member from the group, or any particular event, for whatever reason they see fit. Examples of unacceptable behaviour:
- Harm, harass or intimidate another member in any way
- Advertise merchandise, auctions, services or commercial websites
- Refuse to follow event hosts instructions or directions
- Violation (intentional or unintentional) of group rules

When you RSVP for an event you take up a place. If you don't show up you deny another member a place as events are often full. The same applies to changing your RSVP from "yes" to "no" just before an event. Even if events are not full, a host often has to make arrangements based on the number of people that RSVP-ed. If you really cannot attend an event you signed-up for we expect you to inform the event host.

An event goes ahead unless the event host says otherwise. If an event is cancelled due to the weather, the event host is required to inform all people who RSVP-ed (by placing a comment on the event page and/or mailing the members) at least two hours before the event start.

Organising outdoor events in Wellington means that we sometimes have to make a judgement call depending on the difficulty of the walk and weather forecasts. We always err on the side of safety, but since this is "Adventure Wellington" we are not afraid to become a bit wet ;-)

All Adventure Wellington members can organise events. Of course we cannot promote illegal activities and the host cannot make money off the event (unless approved by Trustees as an exception)
When organising an event, we expect the host to be responsible and sociable, which includes answering questions from members re the event, informing people on time if event has to be postponed or cancelled, turning up on time, taking the lead etc.

For some events, payment in advance is required. If this is the case, the event text will explain how to secure your spot.

If the event is cancelled or postponed, or you change your RSVP to "No" before the date that payments are no longer refundable, then you are entitled to a refund. Due to problems with tracking payments we cannot transfer your payment to future events. To obtain a refund, please email bank account details to If we haven't heard from you within 2 weeks after the event, then the money will be unavailable for refund and will instead be treated as a donation to AW to be used for the benefit of the AW membership.

We often have to estimate costs per person for events and we err on the safe side doing this. If our estimations turn out to be far over the fee we calculated for the event (the event was cheaper to organise than expected), we’ll refund the difference if this is $20 or more per person. Differences below $20 per person will be treated as a donation to AW to be used for the benefit of the AW membership. If our estimates turn out to be far below the fee calculated (the event was more expensive to organise than expected), we’ll not ask attendees to supplement the difference unless explicitly stated otherwise in the event text.

It is common for members to offer and accept lifts to events. We have no rules around this but there are some simple precautions. First of all, it's entirely up to you whether you accept a lift. We do not keep any extra details on members apart from those they wish to share on their profiles. Please use your discretion when accepting lifts. If you don't feel safe then don't accept the lift. If you are offering a lift, please make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and has functioning seat belts for all occupants. You must be a sober driver!

Some people ask for a contribution to fuel costs (say a gold coin) and it is perfectly fair to do this, but you should always request the contribution BEFORE you pick the member up.

You must provide at least your legal first name.. A brief profile description is recommended along with a clear, recognisable photo of your face -- ideally 'passport style', but yes, you can smile :-) We recommend this because (1) it makes it easier for all your new friends to remember you, and (2) it makes it easy for event hosts to identify you. Please note that if you don’t supply a recognisable photograph, it is your responsibility to make yourself known to event hosts.
We do not use your information for anything other than contacting you about (events of) Adventure Wellington.

Please note that Adventure Wellington cannot be responsible for supervising minors, therefore you must be over 18 years of age to join Adventure Wellington.

When contacting other members of the group we strongly recommend you use Meetups’ internal 'greeting' system. This gives you the opportunity to keep your personal email private at all times (please read the instructions carefully when sending or replying to greetings from members).

Please note that sometimes others might 'tag' you in Meetup photographs. Some people don't like being tagged but it is a simple procedure to log-on, find the photograph on the site, and then un-tag yourself.
