Oh sweet summer..at Hemlock Overlook & Paradise Springs Winery!!! - Clifton VA

  • Hemlock Overlook Regional Park

13220 Yates Ford Rd, Clifton, VA (map)

    38.767394 -77.408541

  • ***Cancelled/postponed to 8/4...due to forecasted thunderstorms***

    Hey Super Troopers!!!

I love summer! So naturally, it's time for us to ramp up our hiking and camping outings. We're looking to go to a few new places this summer, namely George Washington National Forest, Gettysburg, and the Great Smoky Mountains! ...And as always, we'd love to have you and your beloved pets come along for the fun and adventure!!!

Hemlock Overlook Regional Park is named after the grove of hemlock trees above the banks of the Bull Run in the park's northern section. We'll start hiking/trudging deep into the forest along the its equestrian trails and in a matter of minutes will be surrounded by woods and wildlife!

In addition, this park features lots of ups and downs along its rolling hills and flats along its ridges (we'll definitely get a great workout, as will your derrière!). The hike will be a variation of previous hikes we've led here before (we...as in Cassie, Allie E, and yours truly).

As usual, this out-and-back hike will last about 2 hours (~5 miles of smiles). In terms of hiking difficulty, I dunno...probably on the easy side of moderate due to the changes in elevation, challenging uphills, and the rocky terrain. But you can reward yourself with a glass (or two) of wine at the winery!

How to get there: Hemlock Overlook isn't that hard to find, but it is a bit complicated. Please allow yourself some time if it's your first attempt to reach the park. We'll meet in the parking lot. Here are some instructions:

From the Beltway, take I-66 to Route 123, drive south on 123 to Clifton Road, turn right on Clifton Road and drive 3.7 miles, turn left on Yates Ford Road and follow it to the park entrance.

From the Fairfax County Parkway, go west on Burke Lake Road. In one mile, Burke Lake Road becomes Clifton Road at Route 123. Continue straight ahead for 3.7 more miles, turn left on Yates Ford Road and follow it to the park entrance.

What to bring: yourself, your furry friend, water, comfy hiking shoes, and cool sunglasses! As always, if you have questions, going to be late, or just want to say hello, my number is (301) 712-5880.

Hope you'll come to the dance!

    -albert

Sorry ladies and gents...bad luck with this hike again. Weatherman says there's a cold front coming through, which will bring isolated and scattered thunderstorms during the entire duration of the hike. I'd love to go, but it's a safety issue, wouldn't want anyone to get struck by lightning. http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/graph/Clifton+VA+USVA0165:1:US?pagenum=2&nextbeginIndex=6 Going to cancel and postpone to 8/4.

This looks like fun. I hope to make it on the 21st.I think that this hiking group is more preferable to me than the Northern Va. group in my opinion! As far as a photo you will see what I look like in person, I have not yet mastered the technique required to put the photos on the screen. Perhaps one of you folks can write it down for me. I have a mask ready to put on in case any one gets uncomfortable at my appearance hah!
    Take care all.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I love them, I really do! No one loves the rain more than me - in the Army, I slept in the rain/mud, stood guard in the rain for unending hours, so I learned to love the rain. However, this was postponed due to thunderstorms, not rain. We're out in some remote areas, so there's no shelter within quick reach should the following dangers associated with thunderstorms occur: lightning, hail, heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and tornadoes.

Let's see, I've been doing this since the Bush administration and my long and intimate experience with this group tells me when adverse weather is forecasted, only 5-10% of the people will show. By staying home, the tribe has spoken...

I've gone through my fair share of dangers, toils, and snares, so you'll have to forgive me if I don't want to risk my life and the lives of others unnecessarily - I promise you the trails will be there after the storm passes.

See you on 7/21..until then have a great July 4th!

I support you Albert. You are the hike lead and should be allowed to determine if you want to lead the hike or not. The trail info is still listed and the rest of the folks and hike on their own risk. This is NOT a paid hike service so your initiative is very much appreciated.

Can we make a vote or an survey of some sort for those who dont mind rain and would prefer not to cancel based on a "forecast"?

If you become the hike lead you can determine that. I don't think it is a consensus deal. It is up to the hike lead. You can always go on your own with out the hike lead.

I've been away for a few weeks while family has been visiting but I'm anxious to get back on the trails. My one and only other hike with this group was a great one - met a lot of awesome people - so I am looking forward to this event!

    July 2, 2013

  • Aqab

Let's hope that it's not cancelled again. But, I do understand your caution. I was in the forces and hiked day and night, dry, wet, snowed under and in nightmare conditions. However, most people can't tolerate this because they are hiking for fun, and not for endurance, or any other reason for that matter. Nevertheless, can't you divide the Group into two and advise as such? It would satisfy all.

    July 2, 2013

  • sandy

    Three comments:

    1) Has anyone asked the hike leaders if they are prepared to lead a hike in possibly adverse conditions?

    2) From my experience, cancellations of this nature are standard under conditions of this nature. Let me say that I am no lawyer, and we all hike at our own risk, but in the back of my mind, I am well aware that this is a litigious society...........

    3) Having said that, I am happy for the weather advisory. Unlike you hearty folks, I would rather not hike in the rain.....

    July 1, 2013

  • Grev

I agree with Peter, Danny and Aqab. Perhaps a bad weather warning can be issued and a "at your own risk" advisory. Lightning, thunder and rain are some of the things that add adventure to a hike. Not all hiking has to be done in perfect sunny weather. All one needs is a rain poncho, a change of clothes and a big smile. Even camping in the rain is fun, if you know what you are doing...and are with the right people. Embrace the wet and wild-side of nature.

Postponed to 7/24 due to forecasted scattered thunderstorms.

Sorry Troopers, I've been watching the weather and it's not looking good. The showers aren't the problem, it's the safety issue with the thunderstorms. Yeah, I know...the weather hasn't been friendly to us lately, but what can we do... All we can do is postpone. Hope you can make it on 7/24!

Does this hike begin and end at the winery? Do we have to drive to the winery nearby after the hike? Just wondering how the winery is tied in???

    June 24, 2013

    • Monica S.

Dawn, the winery is on the street. Usually parking is available on the street outside the park entrance... no additional driving after the hike. Last year that was the case.
