• Global Day of Coderetreat 2016
Come join us on October 22nd in Honolulu's 6th year participating in the Global Day of Coderetreat :) Global Day of Coderetreat is a world-wide event celebrating passion and software craftsmanship. Last year, on November 14th, 2015, over 2000 developers in 150 cities through 20 time zones dedicated the day to practicing their craft during the Global Day of Coderetreat 2015. You can find out more information about the day on the 2016 global day announcement. http://coderetreat.org/profiles/blogs/announcing-global-day-of-coderetreat-2016 A Coderetreat is a day-long, intensive practice event, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of 'getting things done', the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement. Practicing the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time. For an in-depth understanding of the philosophy behind a day of coderetreat, please watch the introduction in this video http://coderetreat.org/about and check out his book on the subject Understanding the Four Rules of Simple Design https://leanpub.com/4rulesofsimpledesign Mahao to the HTDC (http://htdc.org/) for providing our venue at the Manoa Innovation Center "Ideation Room" Suite 160 Also thank you to our lunch and snack sponsor Real Geeks (http://www.realgeeks.com) Registration is open! You can RSVP at any time :) This event is language agnostic (not just ruby!) and intended for intermediate to advanced developers of any language looking to improve their level of software development, design and craft.

  • Elixir Meetup with OUDL, The Prequel! (A basics workshop)
Kyle Oba and I (Chris) are putting together a simple workshop, with hands-on exercises. This is a another joint meetup with OUDL (http://www.meetup.com/dynamic/events/224955265/) We just want to spread the joy of Elixir all over the place. It's time for our first, hands-on Elixir workshop. We'll be going through some live-coding exercises designed to show off the uniqueness of Elixir. Bring your computer, because you'll have an opportunity to write some Elixir yourself. Once you have a feel for the syntax, we'll tackle progressively more interesting problems, and discuss the results. The format will be a short intro, including: • Basic Syntax • Functions • Recursion • Pattern Matching Followed by some live-coding to convey syntax. Then, a series of hands-on exercises that you'll code in groups, or by yourself. Lively discussion of Elixir interspersed and following. Hope to see you there. For more on Elixir, check out the website: http://elixir-lang.org "Elixir is a dynamic, functional language designed for building scalable and maintainable applications. Elixir leverages the Erlang VM, known for running low-latency, distributed and fault-tolerant systems, while also being successfully used in web development and the embedded software domain."

  • Drawing with Ruby & Clojure, Side by Side
Aloha Oahu Rubyists! Some of us have expressed interest in learning Clojure (http://clojure.org/) and maybe you do too. RUBY vs. CLOJURE Here’s a simple workshop proposition. Learn to code Clojure, by doing it side-by-side with Ruby. We’ll work on several simple “drawing” problems and complete them in both languages simultaneously. By “drawing” we mean drawing pictures on your screen with code. People will work in groups to solve these drawing puzzles in this hands-on experience. Comparison and lively discussion of the Ruby and Clojure approaches will follow each brief coding session. This is a joint Aloha.rb (http://www.meetup.com/aloharb/) and OUDL (http://www.meetup.com/dynamic/)/ClojureHNL (http://www.meetup.com/clojurehnl/) workshop. So, folks from varied backgrounds should be on-hand to help you out if you get stuck. AGENDA We'll start setting up at 5:30pm. Please come early if you need help getting things ready on your machine. Group drawing activities start at 6pm. 5:30 pm setup 6:00 pm overview of drawing tools 6:20 pm drawing session 1 6:45 pm discussion 1 7:05 pm drawing session 2 7:30 pm discussion 2 7:40 pm wrap up We’ll be using the Ruby and Clojure ports of Processing (https://processing.org/). For Clojure, this is Quil (https://github.com/quil/quil). For Ruby, this is Ruby-Processing (https://github.com/jashkenas/ruby-processing) (via JRuby). Please try to install the following tools before you arrive (if you can do it and have time). If you need help, just show up early. Questions welcome in the comments below. See you there! DRAWING Each install section below has some sample demos you can try out. Feel free to explore on your own. There is some interest in visualizing bicycle data in Honolulu. So, we'll try to work that in if possible. Ideas welcome. PREREQUISITES (if you can do it) Check out the semi-detailed instructions (https://github.com/ClojureHNL/SideBySide) on how to get set up. Big Mahalo to Kyle for setting this up.

  • Remote Pair Programming
Aloha Oahu Rubyists! Sam Livingston-Gray is visiting from Portland and has generously volunteered to give a short talk on remote pair programming. This subject is important because pair programming is an incredibly powerful way to share and learn new things from other developers. Sam will share some tools/tips/tricks that allow you to pair with anyone anywhere (with decent internet access). After the talk we'll do some remote pairing as a group and continue our work on our meeting notes project. This talk will be in HiCapacity at The Box Jelly. Big mahalo to Sam for giving the talk and to our venue for hosting us! Hope to see you there :)

We are continuing our work on the meeting notes software https://github.com/aloharb/meeting_notes If you are new to ruby or have your own open source project you would like to work on that's ok too :) Feel free to use this time to focus on your own ruby endeavors around other rubyists. If you are new to ruby we can direct you towards helpful resources and answer a few questions that you might have. This meeting will be in the "White Box" room again, next to HiCap
