Gigawatt Renewables - large scale sustainable power
with John Mizroch, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Office of
Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy. Mr. Mizroch is former President and CEO of the World Environment Center (WEC). Substituting renewable energy for fossil fuels helps save the environment and reduce climate change.

A bright incandescent lightbulb could be 100 watts.
A kilowatt is 1000 watts. 10 lightbulbs of 100 watt - An American home typically uses a couple of kilowatts
A megawatt is 1000 kilowatts. 10,000 lightbulbs - Sometimes said to be about 3,000 American households
A gigawatt is 1000 megawatts 10 million lightbulds
A terawatt is 1000 gigawatts --10 billion lightbulbs
The USA uses about a terawatt of electric power (from p. 252 of Plan B 3.0 -Mobilizing to Save Civilization by Lester R. Brown of earthopolicy.org, retired founder of WorldWatch --The book is available online as well as in print. Mr. Brown cites the American Solar Energy Society as saying the US Southwest has potential of producing
7,000 gigawatts of solar thermal electricity = 7 terawatts, 7 times what the US uses now (Power lines would be HVDC - high voltage direct current for lowest long distance power loss.. This would cost large sums to implement, of course. Of course, the USA does spend large sums on various other things right now.)
