Science and God: A Theocratic Assault on Public Education and Science in Particular
In recent years, many people of faith have understandably begun to take an interest in environmental and other scientific issues. However, some conservative Protestants, Catholics, and Jews, prominently represented among the leaders of the religious right and led by a group that now calls itself the “Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation,” have concluded that errors of their environmentally-minded co-religionists are not scientific but theological.
According to the President of the Cornwall Alliance, E. Calvin Beisner, their unaligned fellows in faith have had their thinking “infected by the false world view and theology of secular and pagan religious environmentalism.”
On the matter of public schools, Beisner is clear, and has said, “Public schools are the enemy.” Perhaps his most fundamental concern is that the public schools teach students the “secular worldview”—otherwise known as science. The solution, Beisner and friends say, is to transfer taxpayer funds from those schools to private religious academies in the form of “vouchers.”
Katherine Stewart, author of “The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children,” will summarize some of the attempts to inject a conservative form of evangelical Christianity into public schools, explore the widespread attacks on public education as a whole, and make clear the link between climate science deniers, creationists, and this movement to undermine our public schools.
