Meeting Description: Hey everyone,

Thanks to the efforts of JD, one of UAALA's newer members, we have a new type of event scheduled for our group this Saturday, Feb. 23rd, helping with restoration of Ballona Wetlands.

Friends of Ballona Wetlands, an excellent nonprofit organization, is holding a wetlands restoration event this month. Volunteers are needed to do hands-on work protecting and restoring the last major wetlands in Los Angeles County.

Ballona is home to over 215 species of birds, provides spawning ground for fish and is a habitat for small mammals and other native Californian wildlife. Without dedicated volunteers to protect this rare ecosystem, the native animal population here would be devastated by the activities of humans.

Volunteer work includes removing invasive non-native plants to preserve the ecosystem and clearing the coast of styrofoam and other debris which is deadly when ingested by local birds and marine animals.

*Spend a morning enjoying the beautiful, tranquil and serene wetlands

*Protect the homes of native wildlife

*Meet other volunteers in a fun, friendly setting

*Learn about the wetlands ecosystem & the importance of conservation

*Get a good workout without having to pay for a gym membership!!

Please RSVP! The restoration event is held on Saturday, February 23, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

LOCATION: park in the lot adjacent to
Gordon's Market
303 Culver Blvd
Playa Del Rey, CA 90293

You may want to wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty as we will be working outside. Also, plan to bring your own hat, sunglasses, etc. if appropriate and also gardening gloves if you don't want to wear the leather gloves provided by the organization. This may be a good opportunity to get more signatures and educate others about animal issues, also.

Hope to see you there!

:) Armaiti
