California - Make A Phone Call Today To Support SB 250 - The Pet Responsibility Act

We are almost at the finish line! Your phone calls and letters have been great, but please don't stop now.

We still need your help to get SB 250 through this final committee. The opposition to this bill (AKC, Farm Bureau, backyard breeders) are absolutely flooding the Capitol with misinformation. We need the Committee members to hear from good honest animal people!

Please call these Assembly Appropriations Committee members sometime before Tuesday night. The final Committee vote is Wednesday morning. If we win, we advance to the full Assembly vote and then to the Governor's desk. If we lose, the bill dies.

SB 250 at a glance

Each year, over $250 million dollars is spent housing and euthanizing homeless dogs and cats in California. Approximately 1 million dogs and cats enter California?s shelters each year, and over half of them are euthanized (killed) simply because there are not enough homes.

Right now in California our shelters are seeing an explosion of animals coming into the shelters due to the bad economy, while the shelters are faced with budget cuts and laying off staff.

This enormous number of homeless pets is a moral and ethical crisis, and an expensive drain on our state's finances. SB 250 provides a reasonable, fiscally responsible step towards reducing pet overpopulation in California in two ways: by fostering responsible pet guardianship through increased animal licensing, and by offering incentives for guardians to spay and neuter their companion animals.

Please note that SB 250 does not affect feral cat caregivers. The bill applies only to pets who live on your property.

Please help reduce the suffering of dogs and cats in our shelters, and support the overburdened shelter staff that cares for them.
