***Because of the small group limit, I am doing this hike two days in a row: Thursday and Friday. Please choose only one hike.***
This is a beautiful, but challenging 3.25 mile hike. The trail goes from Centennial Drive to the top of Panoramic Hill. It's a tough uphill pretty much all the way until it's time to turn back, but the amazing views at the top are very much worth it. Keep your fingers crossed for a clear day. As a little bonus, on the way up we'll go through a secret and most peaceful redwood grove.
We'll go at my usual relaxed pace so it will take us about 2 hours, depends how long we linger at sunset. We should be back at the cars by 8pm. Bring headlamps/flashlights; I have extras if you need to borrow one.
Wear good hiking shoes for the steep, rocky trails. Bring water, layers, and snacks, if you want.
My hikes tend to be at a slower pace than most meetups so we can enjoy the scenery and the conversation. Fast-pace hikers are welcome to join and run ahead - all I ask is that you please wait at all trail intersections esp. if you're not familiar with the route.
Sorry but there are NO RESTROOMS at the trailhead or anywhere else along the hike.
Leashed dogs are welcome to join, too.
MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS
Please use this google map for the parking lot where we're meeting: http://goo.gl/maps/cnGQX Click on the blue marker to get directions. For those interested, the GPS coordinates are[masked],-122.241745. This is a dirt lot on Centennial Drive, between Memorial Stadium and the UC Botanical Gardens. The lot is signed in google maps if you zoom in enough. It simply says "Parking Lot for Strawberry Canyon Fire Trail".
From Memorial Stadium, drive up Centennial Drive. Go slowish - the parking lot will sneak up on you on the right hand side of the road. I don't recall it being signed, but you will see cars there. If you reach the light at the Botanical Gardens you've gone too far.
This is a small dirt lot, with room for maybe 10 cars. And it's usually very busy. It's also full of potholes and there is no rhyme or reason to the way people park there. It's just jammed and everyone tries to squeeze in best they can. So please carpool if you can.
If you can drive and can offer rides, post a comment with where you're coming from or where you can pick up people. If you need a ride, same thing - post a comment with where you're at or where you can meet up people.
As usual, please be on time - I will not wait at the trailhead more than a few minutes past the start time.
