Sunset tour of giant redwood stumps in Oakland hills

Before they were all* chopped down in the 1860's, these used to be possibly the tallest trees in the world. Right in our backyard! Hard to believe until you see the size of these stump remains yourself. Let's have a sunset picnic inside the 29-foot diameter stump that John Muir would bring his dignitaries to lunch in (such as Alfred Russel Wallace codiscoverer of the Law of Natural Selection with Darwin) more than a hundred years ago.  *The only remaining tree is 400 years old and in Leona Canyon visible from the Carl Munck school.

We'll tour the many giant stumps in the Roberts and Joaquin Miller parks. Maybe we will discover some new ones. They are hidden in plain sight. Each has a fairy ring of clone trees sprouting from the old roots. Sometimes the stump is buried under leaf litter and not visible. Many stumps were burned or hacked down to a few inches tall by settlers. Some stumps still have more than a few inches of wood remaining, each one is different. It's a puzzle to find them, like an Easter egg hunt.

The hike is about 2.5 miles RT with minimal elevation change.

Bring picnic dinner, flashlight, water. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants (posion oak is no fun).

Sorry, no dogs on this hike.

MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

We will meet at the Sundial in front of the Chabot Science Center. There is a free parking garage available.

That's definitely what it was, Joey. I saw her but was afraid people would have thought I'm a looney bin if I told anyone. I had a conversation with her and she told me her spirit is now at rest because she loves living in the woodlands and prancing about freely at nighttime.

Okay I looked around and this may an answer to the What and the Why... but IDK

"Oakland Hills – Joaquin Miller Park
There said to be a ghost that haunts the park at night. One foggy night, in the Oakland hills, a woman crossed the street and got hit by a truck. She died and her spirit did not rest. This very day, she haunts the park. Rumor is that the park made the spirit a hut and a model house. When it gets dark, people had reports that they had seen a ghost."

I concur with everyone else the hike was very informative and casual. I had a geat time! And I have just one question, I noticed that there were quite a few sites with deliberately placed branches and twigs (some more or less like the pic I've posted; it's a blurry shot... but you get the gist). Does anyone have any idea on the Who, What, When, and Why these structures exist???

Could I possibly get a ride as well, Alina? (You're shocked at me needing help in this regard, I know.)

My father is watching my two daughters that day right down the street. Can I bring them all with me. Kids are 10 & 15?

Is this a potluck or BYO? I've always been intrigued and amazed at all the redwoods in Redwood Regional Park and this sounds even more interesting.
I'm carless and wonder if anyone can offer me a ride from Any BART station?
