The walk is approximately 3.0 miles with about 400 feet of climbing. Total time is about 2 hrs. We can take a snack/social break at Montclair Park near the lake after the walk.
Meet: 6:15 PM for introductions Depart: sharply at 6:30 PM
This Oakland urban walk will start in the quaint Montclair Village with boutiques and small eateries. It is served by AC Transit Bus 18 which can be caught from downtown Oakland and many other locations. The stop is Mountain Blvd. and Moraga Ave. The Montclair Library is a one block walk away. Parking is free on Mountain Blvd and the side streets. We will pass by the cars on the way to the park after the stair walk.
We will walk through the heavily forested affluent hillside neighborhood of Merriewood via all wooden staircases, one of which is the steepest in Oakland. There is one very funky "castle house" and some filtered views. This is truly an urban forest step hike.
Please be aware that due to the rural feel of the neighborhood, there are no sidewalks on the main road that takes us out of the village, so I will be reminding everyone to stay to their far right until we reach the first staircase. The upper roads are very quiet but we must always be aware of cars.
Water, snacks, drinks to share if you'd like to after the walk in Montclair Park.
PLEASE HOLD ALL HANDRAILS WHILE WALKING THESE STAIRCASES. They're perfectly strong but steep.
There are gas stations, a Safeway and eateries around the village so use the restroom before the walk.
Due to the narrow stairways and for everyone's safety, dogs will not be permitted on this walk.
