2017 Solar Eclipse Camping

  • to

  • The land between the lakes

100 Van Morgan Dr, cadiz, KY (map)

    36.777008 -88.059944

  • Join us for the amazing 2017 total solar eclipse that's sweeping across the United States (this never happens btw).

    What: A total solar eclipse.

Where: The total eclipse occurs in Kentucky. We will be staying in The Land Between The Lakes (that's the name of the park... not a vague description of the place). We will be making reservations as we get closer to the date. The sites look to be around $12 per site and holds up to 8 people.

How: It's about a 13 hour drive there. For those who are interested, I'm planning on renting a van (15 person) or two depending on the size of the group. The rental will run us $20pp plus gas shared among the 15 people in the van.

Why: Because this is your only chance until some time after 2030.

    What to bring:

    • Camping supplies

    • Money

    • Telescope (with sun filter... I do have one that I will bring)

More information will be posted as we get closer to the date.

The booking website is a little confusing but it appears to be filling up. Anyone planning on this trip should look into it soon.

I've sent everybody an email regarding our camping situation. Everybody needs to either get a camping permit ($7 pp for 3 nights, but primitive non reserved camping) or reserve a camping sight (72 total for 8 ppl and 2 cars maximum)

    https://www.usedirect.com/CampLBL/

I have reserved a campsite. I'm not sure exactly how many people will be with me, so I may or may not have room.

Me (and a friend or two), Heather, Ian, Tim, Michael Anderson.

Oh, and it's the Piney section that still has room left

This also goes for anybody on the waiting list... you are welcome to come, I just wanted to limit the attendee list

Just looked at the camping reservations, there are still plenty available now. Keep in mind that many of the hotels nearby have already been sold out. 20 out of the 26 hotels that showed up in Orbitz are sold out.

This means if you can't get camping reservations, there won't be a back up

FYI, I am in the works for booking our campsite. I'm in contact with the park manager and will soon have a price per person for this. Please be aware as I will soon be asking for a Paypal payment (for only the camping, all other expenses will be on you)

After looking into renting van, I learned that it would be 20 per person per day of rental. And this is a minimum, so it might be near 50-80 per person to rent this for the journey. I'm wondering if it would be more cost effective to just carpool the 14 hour drive. Let me know what you guys think about this.

I'm planning a road trip through KY so I'll just meet up with everyone there and camp in my truck.

It's not too early to start praying for clear weather--it's the curse of astronomy in the east....

I think we can start around now.

The eclipse itself lasts longer by 20 seconds, but the length of totality is only different for a fraction of a second.

If you don't want to wait until 2017 to see a total solar eclipse. You can see one next week. You just need a boat in the Pacific Ocean. http://eclipse.gsfc.n...

Why is it taking so long for this trip to happen? Is there anyway to accelerate our solar system's rotation?

Should someone be asking Santa for a radar detector this year? New glasses to read the NO Trespassing sign? How about a better lawyer to get you off the hook? Ho, ho, ho everyone and have a very Happy New Year.

  • Daniel M.

For those on the wait list, do not fear. If we get enough on the list we can get two or three vans going. More planning to come obviously as we get closer

Bacon, did some one say Bacon??? This Saturday in beautiful downtown Easton PA is the world famous Beacon Festival ! If you want to speed up the solar system , or at least your trips to the bathroom, stop by for some chocolate covered bacon. There is something for everyone at the Beacon Festival, just be careful not to pig out on to much.
