Grand Fete de la Francophonie at the Embassy of France

I keep saying every year is my last, but then I can't resist when it comes around.  It's a splurge for this club ($37), but I think it's worth it.  Your ticket includes the homemade, interesting and plentiful cuisine of 35 French-speaking nations, wine at various tables and the live music. Just know that it's incredibly hectic.  Perhaps the most eagerly-anticipated event during the Month of Francophonie, the Grande Fête is an invitation to travel the continents of the world in one night: each year, more than 35 embassies unite to present their culture and cuisine to an enthusiastic public, accompanied by the sound of a special concert by an artist from the French-speaking world. You have to like crowds and a crazy atmosphere - and be hungry.

You need to buy a ticket to this in order to attend!  It will sell out. Here is the website with the information and a link to Instant Seats.

From 7pm to 10pm, visit each and every table to sample the countries' foods and beverages and admire their arts and crafts.
At 8pm a live concert will complete the ambiance and deliver rythms of the Francophonie world.
From 10pm, they'll crank up the volume to let guests take over the dance floor and drinks will be up for sale at the cash bar (cash only please).

BIG TIP: If possible, arrive at 6:30. You'll wait in line but when you get in at 7, you'll have about a half hour with the run of the place, before the crowd descends.

There's plenty of parking. I'll find out the bus number that comes that way and post it - it seems to run very often from Dupont Circle and other places.

I thought it was great. Did not meet anyone from this group, but had a lot of fun eating the unusual food. Will definitely do again next year.

I had a great time at the event, but the organizer was not very welcoming. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I found other fun folks to hang out with.

I had a great time. I arrived later than planned so I didn't have an opportunity to meet any of the group's members, but I look forward to meeting everyone soon!

I'm glad I went because of the richness of the cultures displayed. The dresses of the African women were so stunning. I was also glad to hear French and sample the foods. The only difficulty was that it was very crowded and too noisy to have much of a conversation with anyone. I met a few people from the Meetup group, but meeting as a group was impossible because there were so many people. Still, it was an amazing event and certainly worth attending at least once. I felt I definitely had left DC for a while.

Thanks so much for organizing this meetup, which finally prompted me to attend this annual event. I'm sorry I didn't actually connect with the group -- I got there early and the line grew so fast I couldn't see Ronn with his sign, and somehow I managed to miss everyone at 7:45 too -- it was quite a scene inside. I did have a great time though, and look forward to actually meeting people at a future event!

Meeting Up Friday: I'll be in line outside at 6:35 with a sign. Once inside, let's shoot for a first-meetup at about 7:45-our meeting point will be as you first walk into the area with the booths and food, take the first left. You'll see double-mirrored doors that are opened leading to a tent area with more booths. There's usually space just inside there. We'll meet there again at 8:45. My # is[masked]-7494. The forecast is very warm, so it will be warm inside. The earlier you arrive the better!

Parking for Friday: There is parking on Reservoir Road - some closer to Wisconsin Ave. before 6:30 and then after 6:30 everything pretty much opens up. Please check the signs and meters. Otherwise, Georgetown Hospital has a public parking lot across the street. Here's a link for bus information: http://bit.ly/GDDlB8. A bus - I believe the D6 - stops right in front of the Embassy.

Ronn, I think you mentioned abundant parking in a past post. What parking is that? Please help.

Regarding dress code... Style is personal. ;) For a sense of the dress code, check out the pics and video of past events on the website.
