Who is your favorite artist and why?

My favorite Atlanta artist is Kojo Griffin. He was well known in the Atlanta art community between the late 1990's to mid 2000's. I love his ability to communicate complex human experiences (ex: broken homes, war crimes) through the use of simplistic, childlike characters (ex: dolls, teddy bears) or animal figures. Doing so focused the viewer's attention on the universality of the experience. Beyond Atlanta, there are more artists that I like than I can name in a few words. Historically though, I like Gauguin's plush use of color, which set the stage for another favorite of mine--Matisse; Picasso's line drawings; and Lucian Freud's disturbing representations of the human figure. I also like artists who are not as well-renowned, but are good at what they do, such as Aaron Kraten, Radcliffe Bailey and Aya Kato.

How did you learn about Art Openings ATL?

Would you be interested in helping out? If so, please email Hilary - w/your interests. You can be a guest host, just send me suggestions or help with membership.

If I have the time to do so, I will try. However, I am fully employed and own a business, so it will be hard for me to commit on a regular basis.
