Slate Rock (The Short Loop) - Pisgah NF (~4.2 miles)

Let's meet at the Ingles on Brevard Road (across from Biltmore Square Mall) at 9:00 AM.  We will meet-and-greet, form carpools, and head for the trail promptly at 9:15 AM.  We should get to the trailhead at approximately 10:00-10:15 AM. Parking is limited so let’s really try to carpool but, if you want to meet the group at the trailhead, please plan to be there no later than 10:15AM and let me know prior to the trip so that we don‘t expect you at Ingles.

Slate Rock via Slate Rock Creek/Pilot Cove Trail and Pilot Cove Loop Trail (starting at the Pilot Cove Trailhead off Yellow Gap Road). This is a loop trail with Slate Rock as our destination.  Total round-trip distance is approximately 4.2 miles. We will head north on Slate Rock Creek/Pilot Cove Trail (#320) to its intersection with the Pilot Cove Loop Trail (#320A). Slate Rock Creek/Pilot Cove Trail follows; you guessed it, Pilot Cove Creek. We will be traveling up the valley; this will be a gentle climb to start out and then a tougher climb as we approach the ridge. We’ll leave the main valley and head up to Slate Rock Ridge and towards the Pilot Cove Loop Trail (#320A) intersection. The elevation gain on this hike is approximately 900 feet and the majority of the climbing is heading up to the ridge. I would rate this hike as moderate with a strenuous climb to the ridge. Once at the intersection, we will head southeast-ish on Pilot Cove Loop Trail (#320A). This is a typical ridge-line trail with the expected ups and downs. Along this trail, we’ll check out Slate Rock and the view. Slate Rock is one of many plutons in Pisgah.

To head back to the cars, we will continue on Pilot Cove Loop Trail (#320A) until it joins back up with the Slate Rock Creek/Pilot Cove Trail. This will take us back to Yellow Gap Roadand where we parked.

The pace and mood for this trip will be relaxed. I like to soak it all in, take pictures, catch my breath on the uphill, check out plants along the trail, etc. If this is not your hiking style, you may want to skip this trip.

Friendly dogs ON A LEASH are welcome and my car is always pup friendly.

What to bring:

  • water
  • food/snacks
  • shoes and clothing appropriate for hiking and the weather
  • extra socks
  • rain gear (just in case)
  • camera
  • a donation for your driver to help offset the cost of gas
  • anything else you need to have a safe, comfortable, and happy hike

WAITING LIST - PLEASE READ ME - Because of the short notice, the waiting list for this hike will be "manual". This means that if a hiker drops off the attending list, everyone on the waiting list will receive an email letting them know that a spot has opened on the hike. The first person from the waiting list to respond to the email will get the open spot. The open spots on the waiting list will be filled in this manner until the meet-up time on Sunday (9:00AM).

This is a small group so please keep your RSVP up to date.  If plans change and you are unable to attend, update your RSVP as soon as possible so that others on the waiting list have a chance to attend.  Please be fair to and considerate of those on the wait list, no one likes a no-show and please don’t just show up!!
