Let's meet at the Ingles on Brevard Road across from Biltmore Square Mall at 9:15 AM. We will meet-and-greet, form carpools, and head for the trail promptly at 9:30AM. We should arrive at the parking area off Ox Creek Road at about 10:00AM. Parking is limited an often monopolized by road bikers so carpooling is mandatory and I don't want to take more than two cars.
Rattlesnake Lodge via MST. This is an out-and-back hike with Rattlesnake Lodge as our destination. I'd rate this hike as easy to moderate, uphill sections have well maintained switchbacks for climbing. The total distance is approximately 4.5 miles and total elevation gain is about 850 feet.
A little history: The lodge was built in 1903 and 1904 to be a summer home for Dr. Chase P. Ambler and his family, and it served as this until it was sold in November of 1920. The lodge burned from some unknown cause, believed to be lightning, about 1926. You can still see the remains of the wagon road, building foundations, a toolshed, an old chimney, a pool, tennis courts, spring house, and other stuff. Check out this link (click me (http://www.rattlesnakelodge.com/)) for more information.
The pace and mood for this trip will be relaxed. I like to soak it all in, take pictures, catch my breath on the uphill, check out plants along the trail, etc. If this is not your hiking
style, you may want to skip this trip.
Friendly dogs are allowed if they can sit on your lap in the car and remain on a leash for the duration of the hike. Please obey the leash law.
What to bring:
• shoes and clothing appropriate for hiking and the weather
• rain gear (just in case)
• a donation for your driver to help offset the cost of gas
• anything else you need to have a safe, comfortable, and happy hike
WAITING LIST - PLEASE READ ME - There will be an "automatic" waiting list available until 12 hours before the meet-up time. At 9:15PM on Saturday, the waiting list will be switched to "manual". This means that if a hiker drops off the attending list, everyone on the waiting list will receive an email letting them know that a spot has opened on the hike. The first person from the waiting list to respond to the email will get the open spot.
This is a small group so please keep your RSVP up to date. If plans change and you are unable to attend, update your RSVP as soon as possible so that others on the waiting list have a chance to attend. Please be fair to and considerate of those on the wait list, no one likes a no-show and please don’t just show up!!
