This is 6 1/2 to 7 mile moderate hike in Middle Prong Wilderness. Elevation gain is about 900 feet. Most of the hike is easy to moderate, however the last half mile to the top of Mt Hardy (6110) is steep. The plan is to park on highway 215, and hike out to the Rough Butt Knob overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Group size is 10 people max. Dogs are welcome. Meet at Ingles at 10:00 AM and leave by 10:15. We should reach the overlook about 11:00 AM and then set up a car shuttle. This means going to the trails end first, then to the trail head. All of this hike is above 5000 feet, so plan on it being anything from cool to cold. Weather should be clear. Bring food and water and dress in layers. We will for the most part be in what is left of a spruse-fir forest, and pass many springs and creeks and even a very high and thin waterfall. We wil stop at least for awhile in two places that have good views. Expect to be on the trail a few hours, as this place is to good to hurry through.
As there can be no more than 10 people, if you change your mind please change your rspv asap so someone else can take the spot.
