Astoria Sunday Meetup @ Uncle George's

Come join your fellow writers at Uncle George's Tavern!

We will be sitting in a nook towards the back, just ask the host for the "writer's group" or "Alex's table".

If you would like to have your work critiqued, please write "SUNDAY," followed by your name and the title of your work in the uploads. Each person at the meeting should read the Sunday works before the meeting, and should bring them in on paper or in digital form so that we can all edit the works together.

The group's agenda will be as follows:

3-3:30 - chill, chat, order food.

3:30- 5:15 - critique works

5:15 - 5:30 - chill, chat, pay the bill

When critiquing a fellow writer's work, please begin by telling the writer what WORKED for you in the piece, what you liked, what you enjoyed and why. It is as important for writers to know what they're doing right as what they're doing wrong. After you share what you enjoyed, offer suggestions for what can be improved! Each person will have a max of 5 minutes to offer feedback. The writer will listen without responding, and will then have 5 minutes for a response to the group.

Finally, let's make sure to all order some food so that we can be good guests of Uncle George, stay on his good side, and have him continue providing us space in the frozen nook where we do our thang.

See you there,

Alex

Haha - brilliant, Steve. Actually though, I will be there today. It's NEXT Sunday that I'm away. But if you still want to facilitate the group this Sunday, please be my guest. :)

Oh yes, Alexei — I'm all prepared to be "the man", as Mickey would say. I have the timer and electro-shock buzzer all ready to be hooked up to whomever is giving the critique at that moment. I just have to keep the buzzer away from Blerta, as after reading her story I'm a bit concerned about the safety of the group — I think we'll have to limit the tableware to forks and spoons.

      See you in two hours.

Sorry, when I confirmed weeks ago, I forgot that the 31st is Easter! I have a date with the Easter Bunny.

I was right, Steve you be "the" man!

NOTE: THERE IS A 250 CHARACTER LIMIT TO THESE POSTS. SO I AM COMPELLED TO POST MY COMMENTS FOR SUNDAY'S MEETUP IN THREE PARTS. READ ON.

    SUNDAY 3/31 NOTE, PART I

    Greetings, fellow AWG'ers.

It with deep regret that I inform you that we now do indeed have a full lineup for Sunday, and that we will most likely not get to what is now Chapter III of The Ballad of Pie Chart John. It is of some consolation that the III pieces by Mickey, Blerta, and Katya all look thoroughly promising. They will certainly will be rewarding to read and critique.

    1) Mickey has resubmitted Chapter I of “G.E.M.S.”. I have skimmed the piece at it shows much improvement, even though the post-apocalyptic element I suggested she introduce appears nowhere in evidence.

    2) Blerta has submitted a new story, “The Becoming”, opening with the tantalizing line: “Have you ever wondered how it feels to kill somebody?”. One can only hope, though, that this is not a plan for anyone in the group.

    SUNDAY 3/31 NOTE, PART II

    3) Finally, Katya has given us a new fairy tale to savor “Stolen Hearts”. Katya once again takes us to mystical lands of kings, queens, talking birds, and at least one priest. Be prepare to to be transported.

As you know, Alexei is taking the week off, devoting his time to his new project "Travels With Uncle George, And How To Keep Him Away From My Friends." He fully intends to return next week and re-assume his duties as AWG Grand Poobah. He may even be wearing a raccoon skin hat to emphasize his status. If he's wearing the hat, tell him it looks good, even if you have to lie.

    SUNDAY 3/31 NOTE, PART III

In the meantime, yours truly will be leading the group on Sunday. As initiated last Sunday, the discussion will go as follows:

    1) Critiques will be limited to five minutes. Please say something positive about the piece, and then go ahead and dish out your dirt.

    2) Authors will only respond at the end all critiques. This will insure that we give all pieces their due. If you are an author and have a question for someone critiquing your piece, please write it down and ask it at the end.

Well, that's it for now. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.
    Steve

Yes, I have another fairy tale for you to judge.
I will post it today - tomorrow.

Christina, welcome to the group. Would you like to submit for this coming Sunday? We will also be reading the third chapter of Mr. Todd's Velveteen Werewolves. And, if I'm not mistaken, Blerta can submit for this week as well. We may even be able to read a fourth submission, which I believe is Milagros. Does that make sense as the rotation, or did I get something wrong?

    March 26, 2013

    • Alexei S.

Haha - great. Christina, Blerta, Katty, Milagros then?

I will be submitting Chapter Two of John. Whether it gets critiqued this week is apparently anyone's guess. So far there's a lot of chatter here, but no new files have been uploaded. It will probably be up to whoever is leading the group to decide— oh wait, that's me. So, hmm— with great power comes responsibility, difficult decisions, and the temptation to be dictator. With that said, we will be focusing on John for the entire afternoon....

Hey guys, I just realized next Sunday is Easter and chances are I will be out of town for it - so whoever would like to take my slot in submission for next week's time, please do, and I will take the following Sunday (4/7) if that's ok? Sorry, I completely forgot. If plans change for some reason I'll let y'all know.
Have a good week & meeting

Just wanted the group to know I haven't posted my work yet. I plan to do it later today. It will have Sunday and the date when I do.

Since I have experience in keeping Todd under control, and that he's now a character in my novel (at least in name), I'll do the honors. I even have a timer app on my iPad, which I believe has the capability to deliver a small electric shock to anyone going over the five minute limit. But I'll have to check on that — that might only be in the paid version.

Speaking of Easter, I will actually be away the following weekend (the one after this one) - who would like to take on the role of the almighty facilitator?
