Socrates Sculpture Park Extravaganza

Writers,

This week things will be a little different at the Astoria Writers Group. We're going to the park.

Scenic Socrates Sculpture Park, located on the East River, is home to some terrible sculpture, but also home to some beautiful trees, excellent blades of grass, flowers, birds, doggies, etc. The park is not big, so it should be easy to find one another. Just in case, I will bring a black umbrella and have it open next to our group, making us appear emo and scaring other people away.

Let's bring snacks to share - fruit, bread, hummus, whatever can be shared very easily. There will probably be a farmer's market in the park, but I'm not 100% certain.

With questions, text me at[masked],

Cheers,

Alex

ok, ok, i've been thinking about the critique @ the extravaganza the other day and what was said about my work. i see (and had already been seeing) that my work still needs work, but i feel i need to pose the question, (but please take into account that i do understand that my work needs work), when it comes to writing, one of course wants to be understood, but is it always an objective to write so that the reader will understand, or can writing be an objective that here is a complex playground for you to dive into an have some fun?? you may come up with 47 possibilities of what the hell i'm talking about, but that would only make me happy. (i want to be happy). i see my writing more like the painting by Pavel Tchelitchew titled Hide and Seek. This could take me back to the brief talk about Picasso and art that we had and That brings me to the question, (i know we are a writer's group) but can we sometimes set aside time to discuss things like art, good/bad understood/or not???

      Hey Dan,
I'd say the need to be understood depends on what you are writing and why you write, and who do you want to read you. If you have a message to get out or simply want to thrill others with a story, understanding is imperative. If you want to play with your readers and lead them on a journey, understanding is not that imperative but attracting them is. If you want to express yourself being understood by others is not as important. Complex books are hard to write but it is harder if other people not to see what you intend them to see.
P.s. i am writing this on the bus so forgive the erratic thoughts. I was just intrigued by your question.

    sun burned.

now you see why i've been taking so long getting that thing ready.
thanks for the comments. now its back to work. your comments will hopefully get me to a better point much quicker than if i just read it over and over until...

for what its worth, i liked being at the park, but i think the restaurant is a better location for what we do.

Since I havent found anyone yet, I' going to wait by the left (if facing away from the river) large orange gate. There are just two gates leading into the park.

Ok - I am close to the water, by the weird and rather hideous long sculpture thing, not far from the pink blossoms, near a little hill/mound. Blerta, where are you? :D

Hi Barbara, I am not able to open your file for some reason. Tried a couple of times. Is anyone else having this problem?

I opened and printed it without issues. Maybe it is the words version?

Alex - I won't be learning to text for at least 27 more years. What should I do? The only thing I can think of is to walk 20 or so blocks west. I hope that works.

i think i do know what you mean by picturesque, but I do have to mention that I also consider all those aging salamis and sausages and the like hanging in those windows on bway as picturesque as well; in fact, more so.

you know, those 99¢ sneakers, sox, spray bottles, bath towels, can openers, home cleaning products, soaps and lotions, etc and the lovely fragrance they emit out the store's entrance are quite picturesq..... hmm, ok, not quite but some how, i enjoy passing by and looking.

Feeling worse today than I was yesterday - the way that being sick thing usually goes. I'd hate to miss an extravaganza - I mean I INVENTED extravaganzas (okay not really, I guess delirium is setting in). I will try to be there, but might have to miss it.

Yeah well, shivering myself to pieces on the overnight really tested that commitment. And I can't believe the cops got so upset when I used part of the wooden treehouse sculpture to build a campfire. What am I supposed to do— freeze? Boy I hope it's all worth it and someone else from the group shows up today.

    Hi everyone,

My sincere apologies for the very last minute download. If you don't have time to look at it, no worries at all. Also, If you're not a fan of poetry, no need to read it.

What I am looking for in feedback is what the poems make you think about and/or feel. Thank you!

Also, I wanted to thank everyone for encouraging me with Curse of the Ninth Symphony. I've decided to publish it on the Kindle (for starters) and have commissioned cover art for the Amazon store on DesignCrowd.com. So, as soon as an artist submits a cover I think is good, I'm gonna' publish it. I'm gonna' keep you guys updated on how it does so we can start building a kind of database of knowledge on self-publishing. Also, while I'm rambling, I feel that we need more people for the group. It's unfortunate that when the group began and a lot of people were attending sessions at the library, there was not yet the core of committed people that there is now. Who has thoughts on how we can attract more people to the group? I'd like to play with our mission statements and other details on meetup - what else can we do? Cheers, A

OKAY! Now you're talking, Steve. The Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band imagery is exactly what I'm dreaming about when I say that I think we could have a fun, colorful name.

If you like The East River Writing Company, I am willing to second that emotion. What do others think? We can always change it again later. Astoria Writing Society or Astoria Writer's Society would work for me too.

how about a group with a name and an alias? The Sgt Pepper idea I could go along with but i don't know about Company. Society is not my favorite, and i am trying to push guild, but there must be some others also.

My Lords and Ladies, Just wanted to summarize a couple of points that were brought up last week at the (I thought) very awesome meeting. 1. We need co-organizers. At least two.Responsibilities are: booking the spot and making sure everything goes smoothly. Who's gonna' throw their name into the hat? 2. The Group Name Question that has terrorized us in the past is reborn. Proposed so far: 1. Tell Me Astoria
    2. The Royal Astorian Writers Society
    3. Astoria Writers Society
    4. [your proposal here]

Thoughts? 3. If I'm not mistaken, Dan and Maria are submitting for next week. Is this correct? 4. Next week we're gonna' meet in Socrates Sculpture Park. Bring snacks. Google it for directions. If confused, text me. 5. Queen Maria wrote a very nice review for the group - let's get a couple more up there. Long live the revolution, A

I don't know if any one will have a problem this Sunday because the city is having the 5 Boro Bike run. Good thing we changed from Astoria Park, I think that's a major location, a rest stop. My main concern is in being able to get around. Also additional security because of Boston wouldn't be a big surprise. Just be aware, see you Sunday. Ciao M.

How can I say how much I appreciate everyone's critique of my fourth chapter? I think "'Yeah,' I replied" should take care of it. Thank you all!

Hi, I've been meaning to attend but school and the TriBeCa Film Festival has me tied up all month so I'm RSVPing for first week in May. If the group doesn't mind I would only like to observe the first go-around before I submit anything for critique... Thanks!
