The 2009 International Year of Astronomy (IYA) is coming to SFU! The IYA will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the year in which Galileo first turned a telescope on the heavens, and ushered in the modern view of the cosmos. SFU will be a major host of public events for the IYA, along with our partners at the Vancouver chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and area science centres. We are looking for volunteers with a passion for astronomy to join us in sharing their enthusiasm for the night sky with members of the public. No prior knowledge of astronomy is necessary, just passion and commitment! In this talk I'll show you how we can help you to get up to speed on astronomy basics, including specific examples of what we are planning do to entertain and inspire our guests during IYA events. I hope you'll come away from this talk charged up about the IYA, and ready to join us in bringing the mysteries and beauty of the cosmos to the public!
