SFU will kickoff the the 2009 International Year of Astronomy with a free pizza dinner, audio-visual presentation, and star party/movie night. If you wish to attend the pizza dinner, please RSVP at the following SFU web site:http://websurvey.sfu.ca/survey/29581497
The presentation will be on Galileo's revolutionary telescopic observations, and how the development of better and more varied telescopes, over the four-hundred years since Galileo, has revealed the awesome dimensions, history, and destiny of the cosmos.
If weather permits, the presentation will be followed by an evening "star party", with several telescopes on-hand, staffed by experienced amateur astronomers who will help you to make your own personal observations of beautiful and inspiring celestial objects!
If the weather does not cooperate, then following the presentation we will screen the astronomically-themed and very moving 1997 film "Contact", starring Jody Foster and Matthew McConaughey, directed by Roger Zemeckis, and adapted from the novel of the same name by the late, great, space-scientist
and writer Carl Sagan.
