WHAT:      We’re going to go off the reservation this time and mix things up a bit.  I’d like to do a “Jerry Coyne-a-thon.”  If you don’t know him or his work, he is a paleontologist from Chicago and he has a wonderful book called “Why Evolution is True.” He also has an amazing blog of the same same.  But aside from reading chapters from this book, I am also going to show a 1 hour Youtube video of him in England where he gave a talk about how faith and science are incompatible.  Here is a link to this video:

                                                          JERRY COYNE

This guy is funny and brilliant and he has also been listed as one of the “50 Top Atheists” in the world. He’s also done several actions to ensure Intelligent Design is crushed and kept outside of public education.

A LINK TO HIS BOOK  -  “Why Evolution is True”

WHERE:  STONE CREEK BAR & PUB 140 East 27th St. (3rd/Lex) - Back Room

COST:      FREE, but we ask you to purchase food/drink to compensate Stone Creek. Their knoshies & beer are better than in most bars.

Thanks to everyone for your participation and candor. Such smart (and good looking people). It was wonderful to share the video and discuss. Sorry we didn't get to the book but really we should always focus on quality rather than quantity in these programs. Cheers, David

We've had good luck with Stone Creek. They recently updated their audio-visuals and now have a big screen as well as terrific acoustics. (Their knoshies are good. too.) Once in a great while there will be a snafu at any venue. I think of it as an opportunity to have a discussion amongst ourselves. No use fretting over the inevitable minor inconvenience; when life hands us a lemon, we make sangria.

I emailed Jerry Coyne with the meet up notice and he said that he was honored and to send his felicitations to the group.

I emailed Baba Brinkman that I don't think we can make it down to Soho by 9:30 on Friday for his show but I am hoping we can plan an evening for NYCA members to go together to Baba's new show. He's a fantastic performer!

Yes, I follow him for a while on twitter and his web site, though he claims himself as professor ceiling cat, but I think he is a dog wearing cat coat, or, just a cat lover. He is very hardworking, he put his daily critiques on his website quickly and he gets to the points right away!

I just heard from Baba Brinkman, the wonderful Atheist performer and comedian. Here's what he said in his email: From: Baba Brinkman

"Why Evolution is True" is an excellent book, I read it as research for "Rap Guide to Evolution." I hope the NYC Atheists will come to "Rap Guide to Religion" as well. Besides the whole show being about the naturalistic origins of religion, there's also a whole section about anti-atheist bias and its adaptive logic, as well as how it can be measured, revealed, and combatted. Maybe the show could be a book club after party : )

By the way, I heard Jerry Coyne speak at an American Atheists convention, I think it was in Des Moines, and he is terrific. He is down to earth and a forthright speaker who tells it like it is! He's one of the newest Horsemen of Atheism and a star at the University where he teaches.

MIKE, his book is "Why Evolution is True," see above. However, since Orenstein is showing a one-hour video of Jerry Coyne, I assume THE DISCUSSION WILL BE ABOUT THE VIDEO. I don't think you have to have read the book for this Meetup. But I think it is something you will want to do after you see the video.
